Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Tasted as a sample ready to be bottled, the 2017 Uhlen R Terroir Roth Lay VDP Grosse Lage is fascinatingly wild and intense on the opening, with notes of iron, herbs and crushed stones. On the palate, this is a silky, crystalline, precise, intense and concentrated Roth Lay with a long, tight, intense, complex and very persistent dry finish. Highly promising. A mouth-filling yet precise and salty Roth Lay with warm, lush fruit and a coolish crystalline and flinty soul. This was filtered in early March and was set to be bottled at the end of March, about a week after my tasting on 20 March 2019.

Description
Heymann-Löwenstein Uhlen R Roth Lay wine comes from the Uhlen terraces, whose mountain peak is the highest in the region and is known locally as Roth Lay. This mountain is described with passion, emerging from the slatey mist like a beautiful lady with red curls. Roth Lay is shrouded in an aura of mystery, with tropical red tones shimmering like primordial islands submerged in the sea. It is speculated that the iron-rich stones are the resultant meteorite impacted here.
Elaboration
This wine is vinified exclusively with wild yeasts in wooden barrels, without the addition of enzymes or fining agents. It matures at least until the summer of the year following the harvest on its lees. Uhlen Roth Lay wine is produced dry and bears the designation VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. In notable years, Uhlen Roth Lay is home to the highly acclaimed sweet wines Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese.
Taste
The taste of Heymann-Löwenstein Uhlen R Roth Lay is a combination of incredible mineral richness with subtle iron notes on the finish. It has been compared in structure to the fullest mature white Burgundy. Some critics have described it as "The Montrachet of the Mosel", noting its phenomenal terroir. It is a wine that, when you taste it, grips you with its intensity and complexity, like an unwavering siren of the Mosel that stares deeply at you until you are stranded.
