Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2018 Imperial Reserva keeps the brand profile of finesse, precision and power, produced with grapes that were picked between October 8th and 26th in a year like in the past—cold, rain and snow followed by a warm summer. It's a blend of Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha that were put through optical sorting and fermented in oak vats with a 20-day maceration. It matured in barrel for 24 months. It's 14% alcohol and has a pH of 3.57. It's a textbook Reserva from Haro, fine-tuning the grapes they use here trying to control the power of this cuvée, which has to be powerful but keeping the freshness. This is quite young and lively, quite impressive, really very good, getting close to the complexity of a Gran Reserva but with the extra oomph of its youth. 150,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021.

Features

Description

Cune Imperial Reserva is an internationally recognized red wine produced in the vineyards of Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España-CVNE in the D.O.Ca La Rioja.
It is a wine made especially with grapes of the varieties 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. These grapes come from vineyards over 40 years old located in the areas of Villalba, Briones and Torremontalbo (Rioja Alta), in mainly clay-limestone soils.
Gastronomically, it is the ideal accompaniment for red meats and game.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand and selected on arrival at the winery. During the first 24 hours it rests in a cold room.
Vinification is done in the traditional way in French oak vats, lengthening the macerations until the desired color and structure is achieved.
Malolactic fermentation and aging is done in French and American oak barrels where it will rest for 24 months. Subsequently, clarification is carried out with egg white, and aging continues in the bottle for another 24 months.

Taste

This exquisite beverage expresses distinction attributed to a gentle, somewhat marked and tasty tannin that gives it roundness and freshness and a perfect acidity.
