Description
In Kalmoesfontein, in the roughest Swartland, Adi Badenhorst has always argued that wine is not 'made' here: the grapes are not 'made' here: the grapes are made quieter so that the earth can speak. When he and his cousin Hein took a gamble on this farm, the gesture was almost a declaration of war on the easy things: old vines, dry land, minimum yields and the conviction that the harsh sun and wind, if accepted, give precision. Badenhorst The Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc comes from a plot planted in 1968, named after the yellow granite rocks that seem to burn at sunset. The soil is coarse granite with 15% clay, a combination that slightly delays ripening and provides that serious tension, without exuberance. It is 100% Chenin Blanc and, as is often the case with Badenhorst, there are no frills: the ambition is purity.
Winemaking
In Badenhorst The Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc, the winemaking is deliberately straightforward. The grapes are harvested for freshness and depth at the same time, pressed and the must is run-off into old 1,200-litre foudres. There it ferments and ages for 15 months: used wood, big, no intrusive aroma, just slow breathing and polished texture. At the end it is racked and bottled, maintaining a philosophy of minimal intervention: the wine should resemble the vineyard, not the winemaker.
Taste
Badenhorst The Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc is golden, restrained, with a nose that is not "fruity" but telluric: saline breeze, hints of oyster/iodine, beeswax, lemon and bitter orange peel, yellow apple and quince, with a background of dried chamomile-like herbs. Straight and taut on the palate: austere citrus and grapefruit, firm acidity that cleanses and stretches, and that crushed stone minerality that dominates without crushing. The fudre ageing adds waxy volume and a touch of umami, but the wine remains dry, nervy and long, with a saline, slightly honeyed finish, more honeycomb than sugar. A serious South African white wine, golden light on granite, made for the table and for palates that enjoy precision.
