In the south of the Côte des Blancs, in Vertus, the Larmandier family has been growing vines since the end of the 19th century. However, it was in the 20th century that they made a crucial decision: to bottle under their own name and to take up the challenge of interpreting their plots of land without intermediaries. From that moment on, the story was no longer simply an agricultural one, but an obsessive search for identity and excellence in terroir Champagne.
Today, Larmandier Bernier has established itself as an essential reference for biodynamic Champagne and Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. Its nearly 18 hectares are spread over some of the region's most coveted crus - Cramant, Avize, Oger, Chouilly and Vertus - veritable chalky sanctuaries where the vines sink their roots deep down and find an extraordinary natural balance.
The vineyard as absolute origin
Long before organic viticulture became a trend, the family decided to work according to the principles of biodynamic viticulture in Champagne, without herbicides or systemic products. The soil is tilled to breathe, microbial life is preserved and each vine is treated as an individual. This is not romanticism, but precision: the more alive the soil, the sharper the expression of the wine.
The chalk of the Côte des Blancs is the real heart of these plot Champagnes. It acts as a water regulator and a mirror of light, bringing a saline tension and a verticality that define the style of the house. In Cramant and Avize, the wines are filigree, electric, with a mineral edge. In Vertus, the profile is somewhat broader and more enveloping, but always supported by a vibrant structure. The differences are not made up: they are celebrated.
Cuvées that sketch the landscape
Each wine is born from a profound reflection on the place. "Longitude" connects several Grands Crus in an imaginary line that highlights the chalky purity. "Latitude" focuses on Vertus and offers a more accessible reading, without losing depth. Plot cuvées, such as "Terre de Vertus" or "Vieille Vigne du Levant", represent the ultimate expression of Champagne of terroir and mineral precision.
They are wines that do not seek immediate exuberance. Their strength lies in their clarity, in that sensation of transparency that allows one to almost "chew" the rock. The bubbles are fine, integrated, at the service of the structure. Its extraordinary ageing capacity confirms that this is one of the best examples of Champagne d'auteur.
Minimum intervention, maximum demand
In the cellar, there is total coherence: fermentations with indigenous yeasts, long ageing on lees and a restrained use of wood, always subordinated to the character of the wine. The doses are low or non-existent in many cuvées, reflecting the commitment to the Extra Brut and Brut Nature style.
There are no dogmas or grandiloquent gestures. Each decision answers a simple question: how best to preserve the identity of the plot? Extreme cleanliness, attention to detail and patience are the only unbreakable rules.
To drink Larmandier Bernier is to understand that true luxury is not ostentation, but authenticity. It is to feel the vibration of the chalk, the energy of the Atlantic climate and the depth of roots that have learned to dialogue with their environment. Here, each bottle is the purest expression of high-end Champagne, where origin is everything
