Buy Wine from Terra Remota
For more than two decades, transforming a rugged and silent landscape into one of the most distinctive voices of the Empordà. That is Terra Remota. And that is precisely where the extraordinary lies: in having built, since the late 1990s, a project that has not only succeeded in interpreting a territory of immense power, but also in refining it to the point where it has become a benchmark for elegant, precise and deeply contemporary Catalan wine.
In 1999, the Bournazeau Florensa family discovered this corner between Capmany and Sant Climent Sescebes, at the foot of the Albera and very close to the Mediterranean. A secluded, almost secret spot of woodland, granite and wind. It is not a comfortable landscape. It is not an easy landscape. But it is one of those places which, when truly understood, can produce great wines. Today, the estate covers 54 hectares, with 26 hectares of vineyards, and the name Terra Remota perfectly captures its essence: a remote land, yes, but one steeped in history, character and meaning.
The Empordà as the source of a great identity
For far too long, the Empordà was viewed with more curiosity than genuine reverence. However, projects such as Terra Remota have demonstrated with overwhelming clarity that there is first-class terroir here. The combination of Mediterranean influence, moderate altitude, a constant tramontana wind and a bedrock of granite soils provides a magnificent natural tension for crafting wines with freshness, definition and vigour.
And it is precisely here
thatTerra Remota works with admirable precision. The vineyard is planted at high densities for the area, encouraging competition between vines and low yields. Viticulture is organic, the harvest is carried out by hand, and the selection process is extraordinarily meticulous. Nothing is left to chance. Everything points to a single idea: only with impeccable grapes can one aspire to a truly great wine.
Granite sets the tone
. The magic of Terra Remota lies in those poor, well-drained soils of weathered granite, capable of producing wines with a refined, vibrant and very clean profile. There is no heaviness here. No unchecked exuberance. There is energy, length, texture and a subtle yet constant minerality that runs through the entire range.
Mediterranean varieties, such as Garnacha Tinta and Garnacha Blanca, find a particularly clear expression here, but the project has also successfully integrated grapes such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin and Xarel.lo without ever losing sight of the essence of the terroir. That is a great achievement. Because at Terra Remota, it is not the grape variety that takes centre stage. It is the landscape.
A winery at the service of the wine
The winery, built into the hillside, operates by gravity and is designed to intervene as little as possible. Small tanks, plot-by-plot vinification, ageing tailored to each wine, minimal racking, and an evident obsession with cleanliness and precision. No artifice. No grand gestures. Here, everything is geared towards preserving the purity of the fruit and the identity of the terroir.
This explains Terra Remota’s style perfectly: wines with a silky texture, ripe but never heavy, intense but always refined. Wines that do not seek to impress through sheer volume, but to win you over through balance.
Terra Remota tastes of the landscape
. What is fascinating about Terra Remota is its ability to transform a wild environment into harmony. Few wineries manage to blend terroir, aesthetic sensibility and a commitment to quality so naturally. Their wines possess that elusive combination: depth, honesty and an elegance that needs no fanfare.
In a wine world full of pretence, Terra Remota represents precisely the opposite: authenticity, rigour and genuine emotion. Empordà at its Altura. Spanish wine with identity. And a winery that demonstrates, bottle after bottle, that the great places are not always at the centre of the map.--
