History of the winery
This family tradition began in 1870 with Amuncio Eguren Mendoza, a wine grower from La Rioja. Thanks to him, his sons learned how to grow and process vines, making it the family business for the next four generations.
However, it was not until the 1950s that the first wines began to be produced, which were characterised by being young and smooth. In 1991, the brothers Marcos and Miguel took the reins of the family business by promoting one of their first wines: San Vicente.
Today, the Eguren family has six different wineries, which has led them to call themselves "vineyard collectors". This characteristic has allowed them to experiment with soils and climatic conditions in the most diverse latitudes of La Rioja until obtaining results of the highest quality.
Location of the vineyards
The vineyards of this particular winery are located in the province of Alava, specifically in the Rioja Alavesa , in the towns of Laguardia, San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida.
Due to their location, the climate is predominantly dry and the soils are arid, with a calcareous and clayey composition. In short, the ideal environment for vines to develop their full potential.
As for the varieties of Vitis vinifera, the Sierra Cantabria winery specialises in the cultivation of four different varieties: hairy tempranillo, macabeo, garnacha and tempranillo. In addition, each hectare of land is exclusively fertilised with organic matter, without pesticides or potentially harmful chemical substances.
Who runs this project?
Marcos and Miguel Eguren are the architects behind this ambitious initiative. For both of them, family influence has been a determining factor, especially when it comes to developing their work methodology. In the words of Marcos himself, the two brothers work in the same way as their great-grandfather did, with the difference that they have managed to gain new and better knowledge.
As a result, the cultivation process developed by Marcos and Miguel Eguren is completely organic, but at the same time with great knowledge of the soils of the region and the characteristics of the vine. In this way a completely unique final product is achieved, which differs from the traditional assemblage wines of La Rioja. In each bottle produced at Bodega Sierra Cantabria, the real protagonist is the vineyard and its organoleptic properties.
La Sonsierra's best kept secret
For the Eguren brothers it is very clear why the vine is the millenary crop par excellence in the region's soils. Being poor in nutrients and clayey in nature, the soil in the Cantabrian area is not the most suitable for other types of crops, but it is perfect for grapes to develop their maximum potential.
Thus, being located just above the Ebro valley, the Sonsierra is the ideal place to harvest the best Vitis vinifera fruit. All thanks to a microclimate that combines the perfect levels of rainfall with the climatic benefits of the Mediterranean.
