Buy Wine from Bodegas Hacienda Monasterio
Bodegas Hacienda Monasterio is strategically located between Pesquera and Valbuena de Duero, in the province of Valladolid, an area of the Ribera del Duero that is synonymous with prestige and wine quality. This winery, with a history dating back to the 19th century as part of the Dehesa de los Canónigos estate, has witnessed a rich evolution over time. In the 1980s, it was acquired by Danish investors who saw the potential in these fertile lands. Subsequently, in 1994, it passed into the hands of a group of Jerez investors led by Carlos del Río, Manuel Piñero and Francisco Guerrero, who brought with them the heritage and experience of the Garvey de Jerez firm, known for its tradition in the production of wines and brandies.
Internationally renowned winemaker Peter Sisseck, famous for the creation of Pingus, has been an essential figure in the development of the bodega. His collaboration has brought a modern and demanding approach which, together with the constant work of Carlos de la Fuente as resident winemaker, has elevated Hacienda Monasterio to a prominent place in the appellation. This team has ensured that its wines are distinguished by their consistent quality and their ability to age with grace and complexity.
Vineyards
The Hacienda Monasterio vineyards are spread over some 95 hectares, and are situated on a south-facing hillside. This layout ensures optimal sun exposure, crucial for the uniform ripening of the grapes in a continental climate characterised by cold winters and intense summers. This extreme climate, coupled with careful vineyard management, allows the production of grapes with an excellent concentration of aromas and flavours.
The terroir is particularly special due to its calcareous composition, which has a significant influence on the mineral profile of the wines. This type of soil provides a distinctive elegance and structure that wine lovers can identify in every glass. In addition, the winery has adopted certified organic farming practices, reflecting a commitment not only to quality but also to environmental sustainability.
The varieties grown include Tempranillo (or Tinto Fino), which is the backbone of their wines. However, they also incorporate international grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, which enriches the aromatic palette and adds layers of complexity. This combination of grapes, together with meticulous plot selection and manual harvesting, allows for the creation of wines that express the unique character of the region and each vintage.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Hacienda Monasterio is based on the search for perfection and authenticity. The winemaking process begins with the rigorous selection of the grapes, which are fermented with indigenous yeasts to preserve the essence of the grape and its environment. Depending on the conditions of each year, the winery adapts its approach to optimise the extraction of aromas and flavours without losing elegance. This attention to detail extends to the use of gentle maceration techniques that avoid over-extraction and ensure well-balanced wines.
Ageing takes place in 500-litre French oak barrels, which are periodically renewed to maintain a balance between the wood and the wine. This type of barrel allows for slow and constant oxygenation, which helps to develop the complexity and finesse that characterise the winery's wines. Hacienda Monasterio wines are known for their velvety texture, depth and cellaring ability. Each bottle is the result of a meticulous approach that seeks not only quality, but also the ability to convey the soul of the vineyard in every sip.
In recent years, the winery has delved deeper into techniques to maximise the freshness and fruit expression of its wines, exploring faster fermentations and more controlled extractions. This modern approach balances tradition and innovation, ensuring that their wines maintain a profile that makes them ideal both for immediate consumption and for developing elegantly in bottle.
Hacienda Monasterio 's reds are positioned as wines for special occasions and with exceptional ageing potential, especially in the Reserva and Reserva Especial editions, which are produced only in years of outstanding quality. These limited editions showcase the best of the combined efforts of a passionate and experienced team, committed to elevating the identity and prestige of Ribera del Duero.
