Buy Wine from Oxer Bastegieta
Oxer Bastegieta is a very talented Basque winegrower and oenologist and the distinguishing mark of his wines is the attachment to the land, the use of typical varieties, freshness and elegance.
Oxer Bastegieta has pinned his hopes primarily on Laguardia as the centre of a new approach to Rioja wines, without leaving behind his roots in the world of the Txakoli appellation of origin in the historical territory of Vizcaya, included in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country.
A brief history...
Oxer Bastegieta divides his time between the txakoli of his family's txakoli denomination of origin winery and his very particular wines from La Rioja.
In 1999, he had his first contact with wine when his father asked him to make a txakoli for the family restaurant from a hectare of vines planted nearby.
Later, in 2005, Bastegieta discovered La Rioja while studying for a master's degree in viticulture and oenology in Laguardia and was captivated by the imposing landscape of the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range, so he took up residence in this Rioja Alavesa municipality.
In 2009 he made his first wine with grapes purchased from local growers (old vine grapes).
The vineyards
The vineyards of the winery are worked organically using regenerative agriculture with man-mule ploughing and maximum respect for the environment.
Once in the winery, the minimum of intervention is carried out so that the wines fully express the character of the grape variety and the properties of the terroir.
This results in unique, incredible, fresh and elegant wines. Both the names of the wines and their designs are original and all have one or more messages. Most of them express the world view of Oxer Bastegieta, one of Spain's great winemakers.
In 2010, Oxer acquired his first vineyard called El Artillero, located at an altitude of 600 metres in Elvillar, from which his first wine was born.
Currently, Oxer cultivates 4.8 hectares spread over 16 plots located in the municipalities of Leza, Navaridas, Elciego, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Laguardia and Elvillar.
Oxer wines
The aim of Oxer Bastegieta is to create wines with old vines from two sub-zones of the D.O. Ca. Rioja, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, in the municipalities of Elvillar and Cárdenas.
To this end, he invested all his money in the purchase of centenary vineyards because he believes that his wines should be almost immortal and last for decades.
The wines of this young winery are characterised by being made with love and respect.
Oxer is in love with the Rioja Alavesa area, and with his permanent admiration for the old vines that he recovers and maintains, the use of typical varieties and autochthonous yeasts and the work with minimum intervention, he produces pleasant and original wines, undoubtedly created for the enjoyment of those passionate about good wine! A delight for the palate!
