Buy Wine from Pazo de Barrantes
Pazo de Barrantes, a small jewel hidden in the heart of Rías Baixas appellation… We rush into the Ribadumia County (Pontevedra) in a sub zone of Val do Sanés, where Umia River flows and a few kilometres away from Vilanova de Arousa and Cambados, villages renowned for their fishing ports' wealth that provide the most valuable shellfish. Barrantes is another village of this municipality.
Climate here is purely Atlantic, with hot summers and heavy rainfall, so traditionally vines are arranged in the traditional pergola system that isolate them from the excessive moisture produced by the lashing rains; this dampness favours the growth of cryptogamic fungus such as downy and powdery mildew, traditional enemies that can wreak havoc with the vineyards. Soils are acid, sandy and shallow, the perfect conditions for the 12 hectares of Albariño that belong to the winery.
Pazo de Barrantes is a winery with centuries of history, but it is not until 1991 when Conde de Creixell starts producing decent wines and under his name. Years later, after his demise, heirs handled the property management and distribution to Rioja winery Marqués de Murrieta. And, what can we say? It is incredible that a big holding such as Murrieta, is able to produce such interesting wines. Many small estates when fallen into the hands of large investor wine groups have their production quality affected because of a viticulture production practise where the main target is the economical performance. Bravo for the work done at Pazo de Barrantes!
At Pazo de Barrantes they do it the easy way as they only produce two wines: Pazo Barrantes is an excellent Albariño wine where you can find mineral, citric, salty and bitter nuances. A wine that might feel reserved at the beginning, but that shows the best card when you less expect it. And La Comtesse is the cask aged version. An exotic scent of pear, lychees and apricot.
Pazo de Barrantes…simply the best!
