Buy Wine from Manuel Formigo
To speak of Manuel Formigo is to speak of one of those wineries that understand wine from the very roots. It did not arise from a passing trend, but from a family history deeply intertwined with the vineyard at the heart of the Ribeiro region. For generations, the Formigo de la Fuente family worked the vineyards and produced wine in this Galician region, but it was in 2006 that they took the decisive step towards launching their own project with a very clear ambition: to produce wines with an authentic identity, made exclusively from their own plots.
A family-run winery with a vision of its own
That moment marked the true birth of the winery as it is known today. Led by Manuel Formigo, a trained oenologist, and with the support of his parents, Agustín Formigo and María del Carmen de la Fuente, the family transformed their lifetime of experience into a solid, precise and deeply rooted approach. They first produced wine in the old family home and, later, built a new winery on their most iconic estate, Miñoteira, even using stone quarried from the land itself. A detail that perfectly sums up their philosophy: everything begins in the vineyard.
The value of the estates and native grape varieties
Finca Teira’s strength lies in its approximately 6 hectares of own vineyards and its exceptional variety of grape varieties. Here, great traditional white grape varieties such as Treixadura, Godello, Loureira, Albariño, Torrontés and Caiño Blanco grow alongside reds such as Sousón, Brancellao and Caiño Longo. This diversity allows them to produce wines that are true to the landscape, offering a very precise expression of the terroir.
Among all its plots, Miñoteira—the main estate—stands out, home to some of the project’s most prized vines. Surrounding it, other estates such as Portela and Pousos complete a viticultural mosaic that reflects the complexity and richness of the most authentic Ribeiro wine.
Granite viticulture
One of the most fascinating aspects of the winery is its close relationship with the soils. Manuel Formigo works on granitic, poor and stony soils, which impart freshness, tension and a distinct mineral character. This authentic granite viticulture defines the estate’s style: clean, vibrant, elegant wines, full of nuance.
The climate of the Avia Valley, influenced by both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, adds complexity to plots that receive specific treatments depending on their aspect, altitude and grape variety. Here, the aim is not uniformity, but identity.
Wines of purity, precision and acclaim
In the winery, the philosophy remains just as clear: minimal intervention, maximum precision. Each grape variety and each plot is vinified separately to preserve its character. The result is Galician wines of great purity, with freshness, depth and an honest expression of the terroir.
It is no coincidence that their wines have received various awards and accolades since the winery’s early years. Today, Manuel Formigo represents one of the most authentic voices of Ribeiro, a winery where family, landscape and sensitivity come together to shape wines that speak with truth.--
