Winemaking
Cold maceration for 12 hours. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, whole bunches (carbonic maceration) and 20 days of maceration of skins in oak foudres. Aged for 12 months on the lees in oak foudres. Bottled without fining or filtering.
Description
In the heart of Swartland, where the South African sun ripens the grapes with a frank intensity and the wind cools the afternoons, Adi Badenhorst learned to rely on the essentials: little intervention and a lot of truth. The idea for this wine was born out of an almost stubborn obsession with old vines: "if a vineyard has survived so many decades, it has something important to say". So, with a brave and uncommercial decision, Badenhorst opted to bottle the voice of a single vineyard - no make-up, no excess oak - so that the place speaks for itself. Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault is 100% Cinsault, an old-vine red from a small amphitheatre of vegetation planted in 1964, just 1.6 hectares on decomposed granite with a south-eastern exposure: natural freshness in a landscape of light.
Winemaking
At Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault, the grapes are meticulously selected in the vineyard and travel in small crates to arrive intact. They are cooled overnight and then fermented whole bunch in old, cured wooden vats, with a single daily pumping-over to extract with feel, not force. At the end of fermentation the wine is pressed and transferred to a large foudre where it rests for 12 months. Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault is bottled directly on its thick lees, seeking texture and natural protection, with no need for artifice.
Taste
In the glass, Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault is a South African wine of precision: first stone and mineral air, then a thread of fresh red fruit - wild strawberry, raspberry, cherry - with dried petal and a hint of bush herbs. The palate is elegant and juicy, with vibrant acidity, very fine tannin and a saline-earthy sensation that lengthens the finish. No jam: this is an edgy, transparent, gastronomic Cinsault from Swartland, perfect for barbecues, roast poultry and grilled vegetables.
