Buy Wine from Bodegas Palacios Remondo
The Palacios family has a rich winemaking history going back four generations. But it was José Palacios Remondo who was truly responsible for the current state of the winery, planting the best variety of traditional varietals of La Rioja and taking dedicated care of the viticulture.
With great foresight, he trained his sons (the current heads of the company) in the best French schools of oenology and viticulture, encouraging them to visit important vineyards in the main wine regions of the world.
The history of the winery
José Palacios Remondo created the winery in Alfaro, in the famous Rioja Baja, also known as Rioja Llana or Rioja Oriental, in 1945. Some of José Palacios' children have grown and modernized the winery's facilities, as well as leaving their mark on the design of the family winery's wines. However, at present, and after the death of José Palacios in 2000, his sons Chelo in the business management and Álvaro Palacios in the technical management have helped to run the family winery Palacios Remondo, and in a few years they have been able to extract and express the best of the varieties and their landscapes.
Location of the winery
The winery owns 110 hectares of vineyards west of Alfaro, at the foot of the Sierra de Yerga, which closes the Ebro valley to the south. The vineyards encompass the La Montesa de Valtomelloso, Valviejo and Valfrío properties, as well as the surrounding lands of Las Mulgas and Quiñón Valmira, which represent the family's most traditional and oldest viticulture.
The vineyards are located at a maximum altitude of 550 meters above sea level, on a rocky clay-limestone soil with little organic matter and a petrocalcic base that limits the vigor of the plant while conferring a distinctive mineral note to the wines. Valltomelloso grows Garnacha Tinta, Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano, as well as 4 hectares of white Viura.
The winery is still in its original location, almost in the heart of Alfaro, but it is a luxury in terms of asepsis, cleanliness and state-of-the-art technology, with selection tables, stainless steel tanks with temperature control, French oak barrels from the best cooperages and a gleaming collection of oval foudres of different sizes and origins.
Meet the Director of Bodegas Palacios Remondo
Álvaro Palacios is a renowned oenologist and winemaker in Spain. Álvaro Palacios was born in Alfaro (La Rioja) into a well-known local winemaking family, the Palacios Remondo, and chose to move to Priorat at the age of 24 in 1989 to prove that he could develop first-class estate wines in the most promising wine region of the moment. Not only did he succeed, but he produced a cult wine in the process: L'Ermita (D.O.Ca. Priorat). Álvaro Palacios is the best known of the intrepid winemakers who catapulted Priorat to national fame.
Álvaro owns about 100 hectares, most of them in terraces and many more in the historic "costers" of Priorat. The most widely planted variety is Garnacha, followed by Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.
Hewas also a pioneer in the reconstruction of Rioja Baja from his family winery in Alfaro, and is one of the protagonists of the awakening of Bierzo with his winery Descendientes de J. Palacios, together with his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios.
The singularities of Los Palacios
Los Palacios is dedicated to a viticulture based on grape yields per hectare and meticulous alternatives for soil enrichment. They highly value the vigilance of the grapes on the sorting table, vinifications according to the type of wine and the characteristics of the harvest, and the minimization of mechanical handling, which protects the wine from aeration and oxidation during its movements and racking.
In short, the geoclimatic conditions of the estate, as well as the symbiosis of the grape varieties and the winemaking method, define the uniqueness and character of the winery.
And you, you still haven't tried any of the wines of Bodegas Palacios Remondo? You still have time!
