Buy Wine from Bodegas Protos
Bodegas Protos is trend-setting at Ribera del Duero ¿Trend? Yes, we will never forget this Great Winery (large in dimensions indeed) was one of the first eleven wineries to bottle Ribera del Duero wines. Back in year 1927 the legend is born… Protos, and decades later, in 1979, the appellation “Ribera del Duero” appears, a name that actually belongs to Protos, however they give the right of use to the Regulatory Council.
We are now 85 years down the line since Protos started producing red wines following the traditional style; their forward-looking commitment has been great Spanish classics, together with other neighbour wineries such as Vega Sicilia, Arzuaga o Alejandro Fernández Pesquera. The wine-making scene and market trends have heavily stricken the region and nowadays wine process is changing the course; now wineries such as Protos are quitting traditional wine-making into a more fashionable ways, with new woods, powerful tannins and ripe fruit intensity. Protos has definitely started playing at another level and we anticipate a brilliant future if they keep up at their quality standards.
Today Protos has around 1400 vineyard hectares, both goblet and espalier trained, allocated on the best plots of all Ribera del Duero area (D.O. Ribera del Duero encompasses Soria, Burgos, Segovia and Valladolid provinces, being Burgos the one with colder temperatures). Soils composition and texture may differ but the prevailing ones are sandy textured and poor in organic matter. The star variety in the Leon province is Tinta Fina although there is also some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Regarding white wine, in 2007 a new winery was built at La Seca municipality, in Rueda, to produce exclusively Verdejo wines.
Let's see which wines meet our expectations: Protos Crianza remains a classic where you should find smoked, spicy, roasted notes with an elegant acidity. Protos Reserva is a pleasant option if you enjoy wines with long wood ageing. Protos Gran Reserva suitable for well trained palates that look for subtlety and elegance without major upheavals. Protos Finca El Grajo Viejo is the latest and more up-to-date Protos bet with a dense and strong wine that captivates you. Protos Verdejo fully surpasses the expectations on a Verdejo wine. Protos Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica is a Verdejo version after wood ageing… if you are an enthusiastic lover of wood wines, this one is for you!
Protos: Yin & Yang balance!
