Buy Wine from Laherte Frères
In the rolling hills south of Épernay, where the chalk rises from under the earth and the north winds are gentle, Laherte Frères has built more than a winery: it has built a philosophy. Since 1889, this family house - with deep roots in the village of Chavot - has been making wines that not only bubble in the glass, but resonate with the soul of the land where they were born.
Today it is Aurélien Laherte, the seventh generation, who leads the estate with a vision that combines heritage and renewal. Since he took over the reins in 2005, his drive has been clear: to give Champagne back its wine dimension, its primary link with the terroir. Under his guidance, Laherte Frères has emerged as one of the most respected voices among independent vignerons, and each cuvée is testimony to that commitment: wines that do not seek to impress, but to excite.
A fragmented, but profoundly coherent viticulture
Laherte Frères ' own 10 hectares are spread over more than 75 small plots in Chavot, Épernay, Mancy, Moussy, Vaudancourt and elsewhere. This mosaic offers a wealth of soils - shale , clay, loam, sand - which allows for precision viticulture. The diversity of exposures and microclimates translates into wines of surprising clarity, where each variety achieves a singular expression.
Here, biodiversity is more than just a buzzword. Half of the vineyards are certified biodynamic, the rest are organic. No herbicides, no systemic pesticides: just mulching, manual labour, and a deep observation of the natural cycle. The aim is simple, but powerful: to let the vines do the talking.
Minimalism in the cellar, maximum expression in the glass
In the cellar, the guiding principle is respect. Aurélien Laherte prefers to intervene as little as possible, letting the vineyard lead the way. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts, the use of neutral barrels for ageing, the absence of malolactic fermentation in many cuvées - all these decisions are aimed at preserving tension, freshness, minerality.
Dosage, when there is any, is minimal. Many Champagnes are bottled as Brut Nature or Extra Brut, allowing the wine to breathe without make-up. The result is sparkling wines with a firm structure, with an internal energy that makes them vibrant and lively, but never aggressive.
Cuvées with identity, wines with soul
Among the jewels of the house, "Les 7" is perhaps the most emblematic: a cuvée made from the seven traditional Champagne varieties(Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier, Fromenteau). Planted in a single vineyard and vinified together, they are blended in a solera system that reflects the liquid memory of the house. It is a choral work, where each grape contributes its timbre and texture.
Other highlights include cuvées such as Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature, the expressive Rosé de Meunier, and the profound Les Vignes d'Autrefois, made from Meunier from old vines planted between 1947 and 1953. Each is a faithful portrait of its plot, its year, its climate. There is no artifice or industrial repetition: there is authenticity.
Laherte Frères, the voice of rural Champagne
In a world where Champagne is often associated with the homogeneous luxury of the great maisons, Laherte Frères represents a return to the origins: to local wine, to patient work, to an intimate look at each plot. His Champagnes are not fireworks, but beacons: they illuminate what terroir can be when listened to with humility.
Laherte Frères does not seek the limelight, but conquers it. Because in each glass you can feel the land, the history, the pulse of a family that has been letting the wine speak for them for over a century.
