Buy Wine from Weingut Werlitsch
The Werlitsch winery is located in a renowned wine region: Steiermark, specifically in Leutschach, Austria. This winery, which has witnessed evolution and change in winemaking, has undergone a significant transformation in the hands of Ewald Tscheppe and his wife Brigitte. In 2004, Ewald took the decision to return the winery to its century-old name, "Werlitsch". Before taking over the winery, Ewald Tscheppe gained experience and knowledge in his parents' wine business and honed his skills at the Silberberg wine school.
Vineyards
The Werlitsch vineyards extend over nine hectares of land near the Slovenian border. These vineyards are characterised by their diversity of terroir and microclimates. Steep, arid slopes merge into somewhat flatter areas, resulting in different microclimate zones and soil types. The flatter areas, with a higher proportion of clay, are very fertile, while the steep areas are extremely poor with very little soil. In these vineyards, only white wine varieties are grown, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon (Chardonnay), Gelber Muskateller and Welschriesling.
The vines, planted by Ewald's father, are on average 25 years old and are cultivated using a natural approach, which requires extreme care and attention. The winery follows biodynamic methods in its cultivation, reflecting its commitment to sustainability and respect for nature.
Philosophy
Werlitsch focuses on making wines that reflect the authenticity and essence of the terroir. Ewald Tscheppe, who fully embodies biodynamics, believes in minimal intervention, both in the vineyard and in the winery. For him, the high quality of a wine is created exclusively in the vineyard, while the winery only serves as a place where everything finds its culmination.
Here the wines ferment with wild yeasts inside wooden barrels without temperature control. Many of these wines undergo a period of maceration, and some are deliberately fermented with their skins. At Werlitsch there are no fixed recipes; the wines are sulphited only if their microbiology requires it, and they are often bottled only after years of maturation with their lees in barrels.
This "laissez-faire" philosophy is reflected in their wines, which are authentic, idiosyncratic and, in some cases, deviate from any norm. Werlitsch wines are a truly exciting experience, defying convention and offering wine lovers a unique tasting experience.
