Buy Wine from Principiano Ferdinando
Located in the heart of the Langhe, the Ferdinando Principiano winery is a living testimony to the rich winemaking tradition of this region. The Principiano family has cultivated vineyards in this magical enclave for generations. Ferdinando, remembering his childhood in the Piedmont hills, produces natural Barolo wines that evoke the aromas and flavours of this unique terroir.
History
Ferdinando Principiano is a passionate winemaker who has dedicated his life to the production of outstanding Piedmontese red wines, with Barolo being his flagship. In the late 1990s, when he started winemaking, Ferdinando realised that by not fertilising the vines and pruning the leaves, the plants found their natural balance. Although he was initially attracted by the trend of producing wines designed to get high scores in critical reviews, in 2003 he shifted his focus to organic viticulture and natural winemaking.
The Ferdinando Principiano winery is located in Monforte d'Alba, in the heart of the region that gives birth to Barolo, known as the "King of wines". Ferdinando graduated from the Alba Oenological School and, after learning from other Langhe winemakers such as Giacomo Conterno and Roberto Voerzio, he joined the family winery run by his father, Americo. This experience allowed him to combine the best of both worlds: tradition and modernity.
Vineyards
FERDINANDO PRINCIPIANO's vineyards are spread over 20 hectares, distributed between the municipalities of Monforte and Serralunga d'Alba. The main ones are Boscareto, Le Coste, Pian Romualdo and Santa Anna. In addition, the small but precious Ravera di Monforte estate stands out, a vineyard so steep that it is impossible to work with tractors and which is home to vines over 80 years old. Surrounded by woods, a rarity in the area, this vineyard brings biodiversity to the vines. A peculiarity of these vineyards is their altitude, located 750 metres above sea level. This is where the Nebbiolo grapes come from, which give rise to the winery's special Barolo wines. In addition to Nebbiolo, the winery grows other varieties such as Barbera, Dolcetto and the white Timorasso.
Philosophy
Ferdinando Principiano 's philosophy focuses on winemaking that respects nature and traditions. He has moved away from chemical products and produces wines at the rhythm of nature, as it has been done for generations in Piedmont. Fermentation is carried out with natural yeasts and the use of sulphur is minimal or non-existent. Maturation is carried out in large old oak barrels, respecting traditional techniques.
Among Ferdinando Principiano 's most outstanding wines are the Barolo Boscareto, a sulphur-free wine with herbaceous aromatic notes delicately combined with roses and bright fruits. The Barolo Ravera di Monforte, a complex and deep wine with surprising drinkability. The Langhe Nebbiolo, with a ruby red colour and a vinous, fruity aroma. And the Barbera d'Alba Laura, a classic red wine, extremely drinkable and pleasantly fruity.
