Buy Wine from Claude Cazals
Claude Cazals is the history of a humble cooper from l'Herault department, in the Languedoc-Rousillon region, who in 1897 resolves to settle in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger to start what today is a grand artisan Champagne maison. Why does Ernest Cazals travel to Champagne? After four generations, nobody can assure which was the change of mind that originated it, but it seems that Ernest was head over heels in love with a Champagne girl.
Nowadays the winery is named after Ernest's grandson, Claude Cazals, who died in 1996 passing the reins of the business to his widow Michèle and his daughter Delphine. Despite his demise, the maison keeps on producing exquisite wines well remarked in guides such as La Revue du vin de France and La Guide Hachette des Vins.
We will never know if it was by accident or deliberately, but Ernest chose one of the best Champagne subzones and also the best plots of Grand Cru and Premier Cru quality in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (Côte de Blancs), close to maisons as eminent as Krug or Salon. Le Mesnil is known as one of the most acclaimed areas in the whole Champagne where Chardonnay variety is queen and the potential ageing of the wines from this incredible village is duly proved.
Maison Claude Cazals owns only 9 vineyard hectares and a small walled clos of 3,70 hectares from which 4,000 bottles of exquisite and unrivalled wine, labelled as cuvée Le Clos Cazals, are produced.
Let's take a look at Claude Cazals wine collection: the starting wine, without vintage, simple and fresh is Carte Blanche; Carte d'Or Grand Cru, is the winery reference; Cuvée Vive Grand Cru is an extra brut champagne without liqueur d'expédition; only in cases of outstanding vintages they bottle their Millésimé Grand Cru; Cuvée Rosé Grand Cru is the blending of Chardonnay Grand Cru wine with a small proportion of Pinot Noir wine from the superb Verzenay zone; following the same line as Carte d'Or but with more liqueur, the demi-sec Cuvée Annéss Folles is developed; last but not least, y finally Le Clos Cazals Grand Cru, an exceptional old vine champagne only suitable for highly demanding palates!
Claude Cazals: assured success champagne!
