Buy Wine from Raphaël Monnier
Ratapoil is the name of the natural wine cellar founded by Raphäel Monnier in Cramans (France). Although he is a full-time history teacher in Arbois, he finds time where there is none to devote to his vineyards. And he has found the perfect name for his little empire: 'ratapoil', which means 'amateur winegrower' in local slang.
Raphäel Monnier's vineyard
Although he created the winery in 2009, Monnier had previously worked for ten years on a small negotiating project with Jean-Baptiste Menigoz of the Domaine, Les Bottes Rouges. He owns 2.5 hectares of vineyards on limestone, clay and marl terroirs. He cultivates different varieties such as poulsard, trousseau, pinot noir, chardonnay, savagnin, gamay, etc. His viticulture is certified organic by Ecocert, but he also uses biodynamic methods. His vineyards in the Doubs are more than 60 years old with a wide variety of old indigenous grapes. Thanks to these vines, he makes one of the most outstanding wines in his range, which bears the same name as his winery on its label. The white wines come from Vadans, between Poligny and Arbois.
Wines of Raphäel Monnier
His whites are as deep and mineral as they are light and crisp. His reds are aromatic, fragrant as well as fruity and juicy. His reds are destemmed, and have a semi-carbonic maceration for two weeks. They are usually made with little or no sulphur added. Their fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts. They are aged in oak barrels and left to age for at least two winters before bottling.
