Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The regular unfortified white from Macharnudo is now vineyard designated, as there are two more wines from the Pago. The 2022 Macharnudo El Notario comes from a plot that is more or less at the same altitude as San Cayetano, but this is a flatter vineyard with lots of limestone, a source of very massive wines. It has a characterful nose and has had the advantage of one extra year in cask, and the nutty and spicy character is more noticeable, in the shape of esparto grass, mushrooms and chalk, a hint of licorice. This wine has always had a longer élevage, as it's a very powerful wine. This is full flor and full power, but it also has a lot of finesse and is persistent and long. 2,000 bottles produced.

Features

Description

In the Marco de Jerez there are those who bottle tradition and those who use it as a lever. De La Riva -the restless alliance of Willy Pérez and Ramiro Ibáñez- belongs to the latter: two people obsessed with the pago, the orientation and the albariza, with the fixed question of what a Jerez wine can be when the vineyard rules. Their idea with La Riva Macharnudo El Notario was born as a brave decision: to recover the pulse of the grape grape gra pe wines of the pago, without leading, letting the degree come by maturity and that the winery only accompanies. In Macharnudo, with its white light and its chalky albariza, the Atlantic cools the night and the chalk of the soil signs straight, saline wines of enormous energy. 100% Palomino Fino, here the grape ceases to be "neutral" and becomes a mirror of the plot: a rather flat and very chalky vineyard, source of powerful wines, with a broad structure and great length.

Winemaking

At La Riva Macharnudo El Notario, the grapes are hand-picked from the El Notario plot and the aim is to achieve concentration without artifice: a brief sun exposure to raise the alcohol content naturally and refine the must. Pressing is contained and fermentation takes place in 600-litre sherry casks at room temperature, with yeasts linked to the velo de flor. The ageing is the heart of the wine: biological ageing under flor, without fortification, with a long period of time (around 24 months ) that polishes edges and gains depth.

Taste

The nose of La Riva Macharnudo El Notario is serious, of wet chalk, lime and broken stone. Then comes the biological register: dried almonds, fine spices, esparto grass and a hint of mushrooms; in the background, a thread of liquorice that darkens the whole without sweetening it. With air it sharpens: more salt, more minerality, less gesture. On the palate it enters straight and dry, with full power and, at the same time, a surprising finesse: enveloping texture, but constant tension. The centre is broad, "massive" in a good way, and the finish is nailed with sharp salinity, a noble bitterness of dried citrus peel and a very long persistence of stone, dried fruit and spice. An uncompromising white wine from Macharnudo: pure pago.
