Description
At the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, where the relief gently undulates before merging with the vineyards of the Chalonnais, the Drouhin family found in Santenay a particularly frank expression of Burgundy Pinot Noir. The Maison, founded in 1880 and today the undisputed benchmark for prestigious French wine, has always believed that wine is born in the vineyard and not in the cellar. On these clay-limestone slopes, with a higher proportion of clay than in neighbouring communes, the grapes develop a firmer structure and a slightly earthier character. It was a brave decision to keep yields moderate and to work with organic and biodynamic farming on plots historically considered more rustic, opting for elegance rather than power.
Joseph Drouhin Santenay is 100% Pinot Noir and embodies that philosophy: precision, purity and absolute respect for the terroir. An authentic Burgundy red wine that reflects the identity of the appellation and the tradition of one of the region's most emblematic houses.
Winemaking
In the production of Joseph Drouhin Santenay, the grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and in the cellar. After partial destemming, fermentation takes place in small temperature-controlled tanks with indigenous yeasts. Gentle pumping over and punching down allows colour and tannin to be extracted without forcing the material. The ageing process lasts between 12 and 16 months in French oak barrels, around 20% of which are new, in order to refine the structure without making up the origin. The result is a balanced wine, where the wood accompanies but does not dominate, true to the style of an elegant and mineral wine.
Taste
In the glass, Joseph Drouhin Santenay shows a bright, deep ruby colour. The nose is clear and elegant: red cherry, fresh raspberry and blueberry intertwine with notes of undergrowth, light sweet spice and an earthy nuance reminiscent of damp earth after rain. It is not explosive; it is precise and restrained, typical of an elegant Pinot Noir.
The palate reveals a lively acidity that brings tension and verticality. The tannins are fine, small-grained, supporting a medium body that glides with silky texture. Crisp red fruit combines with a mineral background and a subtle spicy echo. The finish is persistent, balanced and refined, confirming its identity as a Santenay wine with Burgundian character.
