Description

In Nuits-Saint-Georges, where the Côte de Nuits is becoming more serious and Pinot Noir no longer seduces but speaks with authority, Drouhin (since 1880) has always preferred to listen to the vineyard rather than impose a label. Joseph Drouhin Nuits-Saint-Georges was born from a very Burgundian idea: to capture the tension between perfume and structure when the terroir commands. And Drouhin, true to his philosophy, opted early on for a more demanding sustainable viticulture, prioritising soil and balance over technical shortcuts.

The result is 100% Pinot Noir, a Nuits-Saint Georges that is based on east-facing slopes and soils with chalk veins and more stony stretches that imprint that dry, straight and persistent stamp so typical of the area. The appellation, elongated and full of nuances, combines finesse and muscle: perfume on the one hand, backbone on the other.

Winemaking

At Joseph Drouhin Nuits-Saint-Georges, the grapes are harvested by hand in open crates, with meticulous selection. Vinification is classic and very precise: total destemming and 2 to 3 weeks of fermentation and maceration in small open vats, alternating punching down and pumping over to extract perfume and structure without harshness. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts; pressing is done in a vertical press, separating the final fractions according to tasting. Ageing refines the wine in French oak barrels, with 20-25% new oak, for 14-16 months: wood as a frame, not as make-up, letting the Nuits-Saint-Georges terroir set the pace until bottling.

Taste

In Joseph Drouhin Nuits-Saint-Georges, the glass is deep red. At first it can be reserved; give it some air and a range of ripe cherry, black fruits and a trace of cedar emerges, with that subtly meaty hint that is so Burgundian. On the palate it is pure Côte de Nuits wine: structure and pulse, tannin present but elegant, holding the centre of the palate like an athlete in tension. The fruit remains crisp, not jammy; soft spices appear, an earthy shadow and a long, serious finish, with mineral persistence. Ideal with roast poultry, mushrooms and autumnal cuisine.
