Description

In the Petite Montagne de Reims, where the chalk beats under a skin of fine clays and sands, Emilien Feneuil is Champagne like someone writing a letter to his homeland: in small, unadorned letters. Around Sermiers, Chamery and Écueil, he works tiny plots of land with a serene obstinacy: first observe, then intervene. Emilien Feneuil Les Ruisseaux was born precisely from a courageous decision: to isolate a plot and let it speak for itself, without the usual cushion of assemblages or the easy caress of sugar. Here 100%Pinot Meunier rules, but in its most serious version: ripe vines on chalky soils pushing the wine towards minerality, salinity and vibrant acidity, with the cool Champagne climate stretching the ripeness and sharpening the tension.

Winemaking

At Emilien Feneuil Les Ruisseaux, the grapes go in for purity: careful harvesting, delicate pressing and fermentation with indigenous yeasts so as not to uniform the profile. The cuvée is aged in used barrels, more to gain texture and breath than to add oak. This is followed by a second fermentation in the bottle and a 48-month ageing on the lees, which polishes the bubbles and builds depth. Feneuil is categorical about the finish: Brut Nature (zero dosage). Nothing should artificially round off the chalky edge of the place.

Taste

Emilien Feneuil Les Ruisseaux does not seek to be complacent: it opens with a controlled oxidative point of baked apple and pale hazelnut; then fine toast and country bread appear. This is not a perfumed Champagne; it is a wine of stone. Under a hint of ripe fruit - more echo of red fruit than obvious citrus - there is a crisp wet chalk and a saline breeze that refreshes the nose.

On the palate it enters straight and electric: high acidity, very fine bubbles that don't garnish, they push. There is a creaminess from the lees that broadens the centre without taming it, and at the bottom comes the signature of the parcel: salinity that makes you salivate and narrow your eyes. Long, bone dry finish, with delicate toast and a lingering chalky echo. A terroir Champagne, more scalpel than confetti.
