Description
Terra Remota was founded in the heart of the Empordà Designation of Origin, amidst a rugged landscape of weathered granite, Mediterranean scrub and the tramontana wind sweeping through the vineyards with an almost violent force. Here, the aim is not to produce a bombastic or overripe red wine. The winery’s philosophy seems to be heading in precisely the opposite direction: to tame the sun, to harness the natural power of the terroir and to translate the ruggedness of the landscape into a finer, more straightforward, more serious form. That is what gives it character. And courage, too. Because in a region that can easily veer towards opulence, Terra Remota Camino prefers tension, freshness and nuance. The blend of Syrah, Garnacha Negra and Cabernet Sauvignon combines juiciness, spice and structure, yet always comes across as stony rather than exuberant. It is a red wine from the Empordà with vigour, earthiness and identity.
Winemaking
The Terra Remota Camino harvest is carried out by hand, and each variety is brought into the winery separately to be handled with precision. Fermentation takes place under temperature control, and extraction is achieved through pigeage, aiming for a gentle maceration without over-extracting the wine. Depending on the variety and the plot, maceration lasts between three and five weeks. This is followed by a carefully planned 12-month ageing process: part in stainless steel to preserve the fruit and tension, part in French oak casks to add depth without an overpowering influence, and part in 500-litre French oak barrels to refine the texture and spice. This is how this organic wine is crafted: without artifice, without overpowering oak, and without losing the vineyard’s essence.
Flavour
On the nose, Terra Remota Camino does not hit you with sweet fruit, but rather begins with a more restrained and serious expression. Bitter cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, a hint of red plum, followed by garrigue, undergrowth, fine pepper, liquorice and a very measured toasty note. Everything seems enveloped in a dry, almost dusty minerality that speaks directly of granite. On the palate, it is silky but not soft. It has a polished texture, fine tannins and a freshness that runs through the wine from one end to the other. The ripe red fruit returns clearly, but is always accompanied by spices, Mediterranean herbs and a faintly meaty undertone. The finish is long, fresh and stony. A disciplined Mediterranean wine, a wine suitable for ageing that is already accessible, yet with sufficient structure to develop well in the bottle.
