Buy Wine with Grüner Veltliner
Grüner Veltiner is the most planted variety in Austria. It is very fruitful and its berries are small with of yellow-green colour. It is prone to suffer downy mildew, powdery mildew and mite. It commonly has medium ripening though late in most of the northern Swiss francpe.
When performance is high, Grüner Veltliner wines are crispy, fresh and kind, but if handled by the best wine producers and in the reputed areas of Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, Weinviertel and Donauland, Grüner Veltliner wines can be incredibly concentrated and with good ageing potential: dry, full-bodied, with pepper scents, mineral, citric and sometimes also with spicy taste. Wines produced in the plains are more fruity (peach). Grüner Veltliner is a versatile variety that can bring about any type of wine: from Sekt to Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese.
The best Grüner Veltliner producers are: Bründlmayer and Schloss Gobelsburg at Kamptal; Felsner, Malat, Sepp Moser, Nigl and Salomon at Kremstal; Alzinger, Domäne Wachau, Donabaum, Hirtzberger, Jamek, Knoll, FX Pichler, Rudi Pichler, Prager and Schmelz at Wachau; Graf Hardegg and Pfaffl at Weinviertel; and finally Fritsch and Ott at Donauland.
