Description
In the late 1980s, Vincent Girardin decided to chart his own course, breaking away from the family vineyard in Santenay to found a domaine focused on the purity of Burgundy's terroir. His vision: to make wines that speak more of the soil than of the winery. Thus was born Vincent Girardin Bourgogne Chardonnay Emotion, a Bourgogne Chardonnay that synthesises this quest for balance, tension and elegance without artifice. The grapes come from selected plots in Meursault, Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet, three hallowed names in the Côte de Beaune. Vines 35 years old on clay and limestone soils, worked with precision throughout the vegetative cycle, provide the natural complexity that this wine translates with transparency.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with double selection in the vineyard and in the winery. After a slow pressing in a pneumatic press, the must of Vincent Girardin Bourgogne Chardonnay Emotion is fermented with indigenous yeasts in 500-litre French barrels (without new wood), where it also undergoes malolactic fermentation. It is aged for 10 months on fine lees, without bâtonnage. Subsequently, the barrels are assembled in stainless steel and, after a slight racking and light filtration, the wine is aged for 10 months on fine lees without bâtonnage.
Taste
Fine, vibrant and subtly mineral. On the nose, aromas of white flowers, lemon zest and a barely hinted flinty note. Freshness on the palate: precise acidity framing flavours of crisp pear, green apple and a slight hint of buttery hazelnut. It is full-bodied but not heavy; tense but not stiff. The finish is long, with a salinity reminiscent of the chalky soil from which it comes. Vincent Girardin Bourgogne Chardonnay Emotion is a Chardonnay for palates seeking purity and structure, ideal with seafood, fresh cheeses or simply to be enjoyed on its own, undistracted, with the attention it deserves.
