Description
From the hills of the Rioja Alavesa and La Rioja Alta, where the clay-limestone soils breathe austerity and memory, comes Oxer Otto, Oxer Bastegieta's most irreverent rosé. This wine is the result of an intuition: to let white and red grapes ferment together, without corsets or rules. In a shared harvest, Oxer decided not to separate, but to unite, and from this free gesture a modern, profoundly Riojan and fiercely personal claret was born. The varieties -60% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, 10% Graciano, 10% Viura and 10% Mazuelo -are hand-picked from old vines at an altitude of 600 metres, where the breeze keeps the acidity and character of the grapes intact.
Winemaking
Oxer Otto ferments with indigenous yeasts in traditional vats, without destemming, respecting the natural momentum of the must. There are no predictable formulas here: the white and red grapes co-ferment, providing structure, perfume and tension. Ageing continues for 10 months in 500 and 600 litre used French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation also takes place. This combination of old wood and fine lees adds volume, texture and a subtle toasted touch. Production is very limited: only 2,000 bottles.
Taste
Oxer Otto defies what one expects from a rosé. The nose is deep and serious: ripe red fruit, sour cherry, blood orange, with smoky nuances, elegant reduction notes and a saline background. There are also herbal and hot stone echoes. The palate has nerve: it is tense, dry, with vibrant acidity and fine, almost imperceptible tannins, but which support the whole. The texture is silky but firm, and the long, chalky, slightly bitter finish leaves a hint of tangerine and chalk. It is not a terrace wine or a fashionable rosé: it is a wine of thought, with power, freshness and a personality that demands time and attention.
