Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2024 Manttoni was produced mostly with the grapes from a young co-plantation by Bastegieta's house in Laguardia, some 50% Tempranillo with a mixture of Garnacha, Mazuelo, Maturana Tinta, Graciano and around 7% white grapes, complemented with some grapes from old vines in Leza and Navaridas. It fermented foot trodden with some full clusters and indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in 600-liter barrels for 10 months. He finds that more than 7% of white grapes in the blend brings dilution, but up to 7% adds finesse and freshness, making the wine textured. This has 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.5 and is a little juicier. It finishes clean and tasty, with a pleasant chalky sensation with abundant tannins. It should benefit from some more time in bottle. 1,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.

Description
A few years ago, Oxer Bastegieta decided to go beyond Rioja conventions. Settled in Laguardia since 2009, he was fascinated by the chalky soils and cool climate of the Rioja Alavesa. This is where Oxer Manttoni was born, a red wine that reflects his desire to show the truth of the terroir without make-up. The wine comes from a co-planted vineyard next to his house, where Tempranillo (50%) coexists in harmony with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Maturana Tinta and Graciano. A small mosaic of vines, partly complemented with grapes from Leza and Navaridas, which offers a faithful portrait of the area. Faithful to his non-interventionist style, Oxer took the risk of fermenting with part of the whole bunch and indigenous yeasts, seeking maximum transparency in the varietal expression.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected in the vineyard. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks, using indigenous yeasts and a proportion of whole clusters, which provides tension and verticality. Oxer Manttoni is aged for 10 months in 600-litre barrels, seeking to preserve the fruit and accentuate its chalky texture. Intervention is minimal, and bottling takes place in September, with a limited production of only 1,800 bottles.
Taste
Oxer Manttoni does not shout, but neither does it hide. The nose is restrained, with notes of black cherry, ripe raspberry, dried leaf, wet stone and a whisper of sweet tobacco. The palate is restrained but juicy, with very fine, almost ethereal tannins enveloping a core of vibrant red fruit. The finish is clean, savoury, with a chalky sensation that adds texture and persistence. Its balance between depth and freshness makes it an accessible but not superficial wine, ideal for those seeking excitement in subtlety. A wine that does not need stridency to leave its mark: it speaks softly, but says a lot.
