Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The white 2022 La Bastid is serious, austere, and clean, with floral notes and aromas of white fruit and some yeasty and spicy hints. It's expressive, with an intriguing nose, complex fruit and has a fresh and fine palate. It has a moderate 13% alcohol and a soft mouthfeel. It was produced with a blend of 70% Viura and 30% Garnacha Blanca, 50% from his own vines, and the rest purchased grapes, fermented in concrete, oak foudres and 600-liter barrels, where it matured with lees for one year. It was bottled in January 2024.

Description
Olivier Rivière landed in Rioja from his native France with a specific mission: to apply biodynamics in other people's vineyards. But what he found was a complex region, rich in contrasts and deeply marked by its soils. Thus his personal project was born, with a Burgundian approach: hierarchy by terroir and not by barrel ageing. Olivier Rivière La Bastid, his "Côte de Nuits-inspired" white, began in Labastida and, since 2019, has been made in the clay-limestone soils of Cardenas, in La Rioja Alta. At 550-600 metres altitude, Viura and Garnacha Blanca -from vines between 20 and 75 years old- express here a precise, restrained and sincere minerality.
Winemaking
Manual harvesting, spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention guide the entire Olivier Rivière La Bastid winemaking process. Each variety is fermented separately in a mix of French oak vats, 500-600 L barrels and concrete tanks, where it is also aged for 8 to 10 months. There is no fining or filtering; the use of SO₂ is minimal, reserved only before bottling. The aim is clear: a white wine without artifice, with a fine texture and absolute purity.
Taste
Olivier Rivière La Bastid opens slowly, unhurriedly, revealing crisp white fruit, citrus peel and soft notes of fennel and almond. The nose is discreet but precise, unadorned. The palate is dominated by tension: upright acidity, firm structure, long, saline finish. The texture is creamy but restrained, and the elegant bitterness on the finish is reminiscent of lime peel or apricot kernel. It is a white wine with Burgundian depth and Rioja soul, which does not seek to seduce with aromatic intensity, but rather to speak clearly of the place it comes from. A wine that asks for time, air and food, ideal for those who enjoy whites with character, precision and a touch of rebelliousness.
