Description
Maison Réno was founded in 2023 in Chassagne Montrachet as a personal project by Réno Pacalet, son of the renowned winegrower Philippe Pacalet. Rather than simply carrying on the family name, Réno decided to forge his own identity using small Burgundian plots, indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention and a very restrained use of sulphur. A bold move in a region dominated by historic names and rigid traditions.
Maison Réno Santenay Blanc is a Burgundy white wine made entirely from Chardonnay, sourced from the Côte de Beaune, at the southernmost tip of the Côte d’Or. Santenay is far better known for its reds, which is why its whites retain a certain air of mystery. The vines, which are nearly forty years old, grow at an altitude of around 350 metres on limestone soils that drain well, cool the wine and lend it a crispness. Here, sun-ripened fruit meets a pronounced minerality.
Winemaking
The grapes arrive at the winery with the aim of preserving the identity of the plot and the distinctive profile of Maison Réno Santenay Blanc. Alcoholic fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in 228-litre Burgundian French oakbarrels. Malolactic fermentation takes place in these same barrels. The wine remains on its lees in the barrels for around a year. This ageing on lees imparts volume, texture and subtle bakery-like nuances, but the oak never takes centre stage. Bottling is carried out with a minimal addition of sulphur dioxide, keeping the philosophy of minimal intervention intact.
Taste
The nose of Maison Réno Santenay Blanc starts off reserved, but soon reveals firm pear, green apple, white peach and lemon zest. Beneath this lies a layer of damp chalk, flint and crushed shell, accompanied by subtle hints of fresh hazelnut, wax and toasted bread. On the palate, it is full-bodied and ripe, though it is immediately balanced by fresh, precise acidity. The white fruit becomes juicy, whilst ageing on lees lends a fine, enveloping texture.
The finish of Maison Réno Santenay Blanc is the most exciting part: salty, chalky and persistent. Candied lemon, citrus zest and pulverised stone linger for a long time. It is neither exuberant nor tropical, but a Burgundy Chardonnay with restrained energy, refined structure and austere elegance. Creamy without being greasy, ripe without losing its freshness, and mineral right down to the last sip.
