Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A cuvée derived partly from domaine fruit, partly from purchased grapes, the 2023 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots reveals aromas of dark berries, spices and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated palate, framed by the soft tannins so typical of this site.

Description
Louis Latour has been making wine in Burgundy since 1797, and theLouis Latour Pommard 1er Cru Epenots clearly embodies that combination of tradition, precision and a deep respect for the vineyard. The house has always championed a quintessentially Burgundian approach to wine: faithfully interpreting the terroir, without embellishing it. This Burgundy red wine comes from Pommard Premier Cru, in the Côte de Beaune, between Beaune and Volnay, an area renowned for producing reds that are firmer, more structured and more muscular than those from neighbouring villages. The Epenots climat, situated on clay and limestone soils, brings tension, depth and that austere profile which, over time, becomes noble. Here, the Pinot Noir expresses itself with less fruit-driven indulgence and more mineral and earthy character.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, an essential choice to preserve the quality of the fruit in a cru of this calibre. The grapes are brought to the winery for traditional fermentation in open vats, aiming to precisely extract the structure and varietal aroma without losing finesse. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels, with 35 per cent new oak and medium toasting. This ageing imparts depth, texture and complexity, without overshadowing the wine’s terroir. The result is Louis Latour Pommard 1er Cru Epenots, a classically styled wine, robust in its youth and poised to develop further nuances over the years.
Taste
In the glass, Louis Latour Pommard 1er Cru Epenots displays a deep nose of blackcurrant, dark cherry, undergrowth and liquorice, enveloped in subtle notes of spice, cocoa and fine oak. On the palate, it is generous, fresh and well-structured, with discreet yet firm tannins, very much in keeping with the Louis Latour style. It does not seek exuberance, but rather seriousness, length and restrained elegance. The finish leaves hints of black fruit, damp earth and gentle spices. A Pinot with vigour and class.
