Description
Louis Latour had no need to step outside its comfort zone to prove that it understands Pinot Noir like few other houses in Burgundy. And yet it did. With Louis Latour Les Pierres Dorées Pinot Noir, the house ventured into the heart of Beaujolais in search of a different interpretation of the variety, planting vineyards in Morancé and Theizé, on those clay-limestone soils rich in iron oxide that give the earth an almost golden ochre hue. This is where the name – and indeed the character – of the wine originates. The altitude, between 280 and 400 metres, and a moderate continental climate allow for a leisurely ripening process, with ample sunlight but cool nights. It is 100%Pinot Noir, yet possesses a tension and a mineral edge that set it apart from a simple, fruity red. There is a clear vision here: to bring Burgundian expertise beyond the Côte d’Or without compromising on rigour or identity.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Louis Latour Les Pierres Dorées Pinot Noir is classic and unpretentious. Mechanised harvesting, traditional fermentation in open vats, followed by ageing for 10 to 12 months in a combination of stainless steel tanks and medium-toasted French oak barrels from the Louis Latour cooperage. This is precisely where the wine’s ingenuity lies: the steel preserves the tension, fruit and verticality; the oak contributes depth, spice and a more enveloping texture, but without ever pushing the Pinot towards heaviness. With yields of 48 hl/ha and young vines aged around 7 years, the aim is precision, not exuberance.
Taste
On the nose, Louis Latour Les Pierres Dorées Pinot Noir is immediately seductive, yet far from banal. Black cherry and hints of red berries emerge, followed by mocha, nutmeg and liquorice. It is neither an airy nor an overly perfumed Pinot; rather, it possesses a serene gravitas, a blend of ripe fruit and dried spice, with a very appealing earthy-limestone undertone. On the palate, it is generous, with fine, well-defined tannins and a freshness that propels the wine forward. The black fruit returns, wrapped in liquorice and a very subtle toasty note. It has breadth, but also vigour. It does not seek to be light, but rather juicy, fresh and serious all at once. A Pinot Noir with restrained power, great honesty and a discreet yet constant minerality.
