Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Whole-cluster fruit and aged for 16 months in oak, the 2013 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières has an extravagant bouquet with touches of mint and fennel infusing the citrus fruit, although I would have liked a little more austerity. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, admirable weight in the mouth, with touches of white peach and orange sorbet toward the finish. I find this is just trying a little too hard, expending too much effort in trying to live up to the reputation of the vineyard.

Features

Description

At Joseph Drouhin, in Beaune, there is a fixed idea: Burgundy should not be "made up". That the wine should be a mirror of the place and the vintage. With Joseph Drouhin Meursault 1er Cru Perrières, this philosophy becomes almost literal. Perrières - the name says it all - is born in a site of stony soils, with dry and poor limestone that forces the vines to go deeper and give less, but better: not easy exuberance, but energy, precision and that minerality that is felt as a vibration. The variety is Chardonnay, here naked and proud, without unnecessary adornment.

Winemaking

Joseph Drouhin Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is made with grapes and musts from partner suppliers, worked to the maison's exacting specifications. The grapes are harvested by hand in aerated crates and, if necessary, sorted so that only clean, healthy fruit arrives at the winery. Slow pressing in a pneumatic press separates the free-run juice from the last pressing: finesse and texture are decided here. After a light racking, the must is transferred to the barrel, where it undergoes alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation and ageing. The wood is used as a tool, not as a signature: 20-25% new oak, and resting for 16-18 months.

Taste

There are Meursaults that enter through butter; Joseph Drouhin Meursault 1er Cru Perrières enters through stone. The nose opens with light: pear, restrained stone fruit, lemon peel and a background of toasted hazelnut/almond, more warm bread than dessert. The palate feels full and creamy, but a chalky backbone immediately appears, stretching and refining it. The vintage adds body, but the finish is dry, long, with a touch of subtle toast and a mineral persistence that makes you salivate. A Burgundy white wine that doesn't shout, but stays: elegant, precise and gastronomic.
