Description
Itsasmendi Leioa was born out of a rather uncompromising idea: not simply to produce a pleasant, fruity Txakoli, but to bottle the raw character of a specific vineyard plot. In Bizkaia, under the influence of the Atlantic, Itsasmendi has been demonstrating for years that Txakoli can be a serious, profound and thoroughly gastronomic white wine. On the Peruri plot in Leioa, the winery has opted for a bold interpretation of the Hondarrabi Zuri grape, harvested in the first week of ripening to preserve all its natural vibrancy. The shallow, loam-clay soils over limestone and marl, together with the cool, humid climate of the Bizkaiko Txakolina region, imbue the wine with a salty, austere and vertical character. Here there are no concessions to exuberance, only landscape, tension and purity.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Itsasmendi Leioa is designed to respect the vineyard’s character as fully as possible. The grapes are harvested with freshness and precision, and the wine ferments and matures for 15 months on its fine lees in 17-hectolitre concrete egg-shaped vats. This ageing process imparts depth, texture and length, without masking the wine’s profile with external aromas. There is no oak, no embellishment, just time, lees and very carefully controlled micro-oxygenation. The result is a limited-production single-vineyard wine, just 4,135 bottles, which sits more firmly in the realm of great Atlantic wines than that of light, simple whites.
Taste
On the nose, Itsasmendi Leioa is restrained, stony and very refined. Notes of dried white flowers, lime zest, lemon, white grapefruit and a distinct sensation of damp rock and salinity emerge. The fruit is barely hinted at, with hints of crisp pear and white peach, always beneath a powerful mineral layer. On the palate, it displays precise acidity, a fibrous texture and impressive vigour. It is dry, long and briny, with notes of oyster shell, delicate herbs and a noble bitterness on the finish. A Txakoli with ageing potential: pure, taut and deeply gastronomic.
