Description
From its roots, the idea of making this wine came as a declaration of love for the terroir: Domaine de Villaine, guided by Aubert de Villaine - a man of firm convictions and Burgundian sensibility - chose the Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Cloux vineyard, a forgotten corner of Rully, exposed to the east and blessed by natural springs. There, the Chardonnay vines, with an average age of 45 years, are rooted in clay and limestone soils that provide tension and depth. This 1.1 ha Premier Cru expresses the Côte Chalonnaise from a delicate, precise and essentialist point of view. Cultivated under a philosophy of respect for the ecosystem and minimal intervention, Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Cloux Blanc represents a courageous decision: to bring back to the forefront a plot with history, but without fuss or make-up. Just grapes and soil.
Winemaking
The vinification of Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Cloux aims to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the soil. The grapes, harvested by hand, ferment and age in a combination of foudres, demi-muids and barrels. Only 10% of the wood is new, which allows the wine to be structured without masking its origin. Ageing lasts between 12 and 18 months, followed by 8 to 12 months in the bottle before release. Each stage is designed to let the vineyard do the talking and not the winemaker.
Taste
Aromatically, Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Cloux opens with restraint and finesse: notes of ripe citrus, white peach, pear skin, and a floral touch reminiscent of hawthorn and vine blossom. The oak is almost imperceptibly integrated, providing a subtle spicy background. On the palate, the texture is precise, with controlled tension, and a vibrant acidity that gives verticality and length. The minerality, marked by chalky notes and a very subtle salinity, dominates the fruit. The finish is restrained but long, with a slight citrus bitterness and hints of wet stone, almost ethereal.
