Description

In the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, Domaine de Villaine - an emblematic figure in Burgundy and co-owner of Romanée-Conti - found in Bouzeron a refuge for a more intimate viticulture, committed to the expression of terroir without artifice. Together with his wife Pamela, he has chosen to revive forgotten soils and indigenous varieties, convinced that the purity and honesty of wine is born in the vineyard, not in the cellar. Domaine de Villaine Bourgogne Rouge is testimony to this philosophy: made exclusively in this vintage, due to low yields, it combines parcels from La Fortune and La Digoine (Côte Chalonnaise), Les Montots (Mercurey) and Passetemps (Santenay 1er Cru). Vines from 25 to 45 years old, planted on clay and limestone soils, give birth to a Pinot Noir with character, verticality and a restrained intensity that reveals its origin.

Winemaking

Harvesting was manual and meticulous, with strict selection in the field. In the cellar, Domaine de Villaine Bourgogne Rouge is fermented in wooden vats with indigenous yeasts, incorporating approximately 25% of whole bunches to provide structure and natural freshness. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in oak barrels, 10% of which are new. This approach seeks to preserve the identity of the Pinot Noir and to honestly express the mineral character of the terroir. Bottling is carried out without fining or filtering, in line with a philosophy that prioritises purity over intervention.

Taste

Aromatically, Domaine de Villaine Bourgogne Rouge is pure, perfumed and restrained. It opens with notes of ripe cherry, fresh raspberry and violets, crossed by a subtle patina of spices - white pepper, clove, liquorice root - suggesting depth without excess. The palate is lean, agile, with a crisp acidity that guides the passage of the wine like a thread of constant tension. The tannins, fine but present, structure without heaviness. There is a lingering minerality reminiscent of wet limestone, an echo of the soil that sustains the aromatic profile through to the finish. It does not seek to impress by volume, but by precision. Like all great wines with a Burgundian soul, it is a whisper rather than a shout: austere, refined, with an energy born of the earth and expressed with quiet elegance.
