Description

In a secluded corner of Rully, in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, lies Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Margotés, a plot of barely one hectare that is home to a unique expression of Burgundian Chardonnay. It was here that Aubert de Villaine, the soul of Romanée-Conti, together with his nephew Pierre de Benoist, decided to revalue the family legacy from a purist vision, centred on absolute respect for the land. The choice was clear and early: organic farming since the 1980s, long before organic became a symbol. Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Margotés, vines between 20 and 60 years old sink their roots in a mosaic of white clay and limestone, a soil which, together with the temperate continental climate, gives the wine a deep, vertical and precise character. The wine is born of terroir, but also of patient and discreet decisions.

Winemaking

The grapes for Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Margotés are harvested by hand and carefully selected in the vineyard. The whole grapes are gently pressed and the must flows by gravity into large wooden vats where it ferments spontaneously. There it also undergoes malolactic fermentation and remains for 12 to 18 months on fine lees, without batônnage, respecting its natural balance. After ageing, it is bottled and rests for a further 12 months, refining in silence until it shows its fullness.

Taste

The first taste of Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Margotés is pure mineral perfume. White flowers, beeswax, lemon zest and toast emerge subtly, as if each note were emerging from the very ground. On the palate, it is satiny in texture, but with a firm backbone: lively, taut acidity that lengthens the wine and makes it saline. Echoes of nectarine, fresh almond, pink grapefruit appear, all wrapped in a background of wet chalk. It is a wine that does not seek to please everyone, but to seduce with austere elegance. The finish is long, spicy, with a hint of flint and that electric freshness that anticipates a long life in bottle. A Burgundian Chardonnay that speaks more of earth than fruit, more of precision than opulence. Perfect for those seeking clarity, structure and authenticity in every sip.
