Description
A gentle breeze ruffles the hills of Rully, whispering the story of a family passion: Domaine de Villaine. The idea of giving life to Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Les Champs Cloux was born from the desire to express frankly the mineral and delicate character of this 1.9 ha plot, located on a south-facing premier cru. Pierre de Benoist, Aubert de Villaine 's nephew, took the decision to vinify with 20% whole bunches and to dispense with new oak - a commitment to terroir transparency rather than oenological intervention. The vines, with an average age of 45 years, are rooted in the classic clay-limestone soils of the Côte Chalonnaise, where the continental climate gives the Pinot Noir a cool, restrained tension. Between thoughtful and courageous decisions - such as delaying fermentation in cool vintages to preserve the essentials - the wine comes alive with character and purpose.
Winemaking
The grapes for Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Les Champs Cloux are harvested by hand and carefully selected in the vineyard. Once in the cellar, the wine is fermented with 20% whole bunches, providing structure, verticality and an earthy touch. Ageing takes between 12 and 18 months in demi-muids or used barrels, always avoiding new oak so as not to mask the fruit and minerality. Finally, Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Les Champs Cloux rests for 2 to 6 months in bottle before release, refining without losing its vibrant and austere character.
Taste
On the nose, Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Les Champs Cloux offers a restrained and elegant palette: sour cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant, enveloped in a veil of faint smoke and damp earth. Some bottles show spicy notes - clove, pink pepper, even a faint hint of nutmeg - reminiscent of an almost Gamay character. On the palate, it has marked acidity, fine but present tannins, and a restrained energy that makes it vibrant and persistent. The fruit is kept in the background, letting minerality and texture drive the experience. It is a wine for cellaring, with the austerity of an authentic Premier Cru, perfect for those seeking elegance without ornamentation and an honest expression of Rully's Pinot Noir.
