Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The new white 2021 Valtuille El Val comes from a plot in that paraje (lieu-dit) that was planted with Godello 35 years ago. It fermented in barrel with indigenous yeast and matured in those 500-liter barrels with the lees but without any bâtonnage for one year. It has 12.9% alcohol, a low pH and very good acidity, denoting the freshness from the year. This is sharp, austere and mineral, with notes of flint and a stony sensation in the palate—chalky, dry and very tasty. It is a great expression of Godello and the stony soils. 1,800 bottles were filled in August 2022. This replaces the old Valtuille Godello, which was from a barrel selection, and now it's only from this paraje.

Description
Nestled in the heart of Bierzo, the García family - with Raúl Pérez as a beacon and inspiration - has been interpreting their land with an almost ascetic fidelity for generations. In Valtuille de Abajo, a small village that breathes vineyard in every corner, the soils of red clay, decomposed slate and coarse sand mould the personality of each vine. It was precisely in a forgotten plot of Godello, surrounded by old Mencía vines, where the idea arose: why not give the Godello back its rightful place in the Bierzo, without make-up, without invasive wood, without concessions? The answer was a wine without shortcuts, a Godello from Bierzo that does not seek to please everyone, but to speak clearly.
The character of this wine is also marked by a radical decision: to vinify grapes from a single plot facing north, colder, more austere, where maturity occurs slowly and the nights are able to retain all the tension that the day accumulates. From the 2021 vintage, this plot will be bottled as a Vino de Paraje, under the official name "El Val". The Godello here is not exuberant, but deep, insinuating, with that quiet elegance that only comes with time and risk. A land of transition between the Atlantic and the continental, El Bierzo puts its stamp on this wine: humidity, light filtered by morning mists and a wild minerality that can be felt even before tasting it.
Winemaking
Harvesting, always by hand, is carried out in small boxes, with rigorous selection in the vineyard itself. The grapes that give life to Valtuille Godello come from a single west-facing slope in the "El Val" area. After gentle pressing and without destemming, fermentation takes place in 500 and 700 litre oak barrels with indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place for a year on its fine lees, without battonage, in the same barrels. There is no fining or filtering. The wine is bottled by natural decanting, and annual production is very limited: just 1,100 bottles.
Taste
On the nose, Valtuille Godello opens with a restrained, almost enigmatic note. There are no tropical fruits or floral notes. Instead, a dry salinity, a whisper of wild fennel, lemon peel and a faint hint of beeswax. Then, with some air, nuances of green apricot, raw almond and an echo of wet stone after the rain emerge. All in muted tones, like someone who doesn't want to show off but leaves a mark. The wine is expressive, aromatic and harmonious from the first moment.
On the palate, the attack is straightforward, without beating about the bush: a sharp, vertical acidity, more reminiscent of a Chenin from Saumur or certain dryRieslings from Nahe than the more conventional Godellos. But here there is weight, there is a restrained density, as if the wine were advancing stealthily, fine muscle and taut fibre. The centre of the palate is clean, saline, with notes of lime peel, white grapefruit and a dry herbaceous background reminiscent of lemon thyme. The finish is long, sharp, with a mineral persistence that does not let up. Tasty, dry and clean, as Wine Advocate states, it is a wine that leaves a clear and precise impression, without excess of embellishments.
Valtuille Godello is not a wine for those who seek the obvious. It is for those who understand silence, fine lines, the beauty of nuance. A wine that demands attention and gives back character. Without ornamentation, without fear of nudity.
