Description

Louis Roederer Collection 246 is the point at which the maison decides to stop "reproducing" a fixed style and start composing. After decades of mastering the art of non-vintage Champagne, Roederer understands that vintages are no longer a repeatable pattern: the climate changes, viticulture is refined and precision demands another freedom. That is why Collection was born, a multi-vintage Champagne that does not seek uniformity, but fidelity to the terroir. Louis Roederer Collection 246 is not a wink: it marks the 246th vintage of the house; here the base vintage is 2021 (55%), a demanding year that forced courageous decisions in selection and blending. The blend is based on Chardonnay (54%), with Pinot Noir (35%) and Meunier (11%), and is nourished by three great identities of origin: La Côte (chalk and tension), La Montagne (structure) and La Rivière (fleshiness and fruit), so that the wine is more "from the vineyard" than from a recipe.

Winemaking

In Louis Roederer Collection 246, the grapes are harvested by hand, with careful pressing and vinification designed to add layers without losing edge. The blend is built as an architecture: 35% of Reserva Perpetua (a continuous reserve of 2012-2020 vintages) and 10% of reserve wines in wood are added to the base wine 2021. Part of the wine (approx. 24%) is fermented or aged in large French oak foudres, aiming for breadth and fine spice, not barrel flavour. Malolactic fermentation takes place only around 30%, to maintain nerve and verticality. The dosage is 7 g/L: a dry, chalky Brut.

Taste

Louis Roederer Collection 246 in the glass shows a pale sheen and very fine, constant, almost silky bubbles. On opening it may hint at a marine and smoky touch, very discreet, which clears with air. Then a citrus-yellow register appears: candied lemon, lime peel, stone fruit (mirabelle, nectarine) and a subtle, elegant toastiness, more like fine bread than pastries. Delicate but firm on the palate: the bubbles melt into cream, and then comes the chalky signature, that chalky, salty sensation that makes you salivate and sharpens the finish. The centre combines freshness with restrained weight, and the aftertaste stretches out serenely, with fine smoke and faint spice, leaving an impression of a Champagne that is mineral, dry, precise and deeply gastronomic.
