Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Latour's 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru wafts from the glass with notes of pear, mandarin oil and peach mingled with notes of struck match and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's rich and textural, with a sweet, layered core of fruit and an expansive finish. Now bottled under Diam, it should age with grace.

Features

Description

Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru is the result of a bold decision. In the wake of the phylloxera epidemic, the Latour family grubbed up old plots of Aligoté and Pinot Noir to replant them with Chardonnay – an unusual move at the time, yet one that proved decisive in creating one of Burgundy’s great white wines. On the slopes of Corton, within the Côte de Beaune and theCorton Charlemagne Grand Cru appellation, the estate cultivates vines around 30 years old on stony limestone, with a south-easterly aspect and hand-harvested grapes. There, the sun slowly ripens the grapes and the soil imbues the wine with that stony character, tension and quiet nobility that distinguishes a great Burgundy white wine.

Winemaking

The winemaking processfor Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne Grand Crufollows a classic and precise approach. The grapes are harvested by hand and brought into the winery in moderate yields, with the aim of achieving concentration and purity. Fermentation takes place in the traditional manner in oak barrels, followed by full malolactic fermentation, which refines the texture and adds depth without obscuring the mineral edge. The wine is then aged for between 8 and 10 months in new, medium-toasted French oak barrels from the maison’s own cooperage. The ageing does not overpower; it provides structure. It imparts depth, dimension and an enveloping texture prior to bottling. Thus, this Grand Cru combines limestone-driven energy, volume and ageing potential.

Taste

On the nose, Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru opens with delicate vanilla, fresh hazelnut and white peach, followed by notes of lime blossom, acacia and a hint of pale honey. Yet it is not an exuberant white: beneath that aromatic layer, the cool stone always pulses. On the palate, it is full-bodied, creamy and stately, with ripe white fruit, fresh almond and beautifully integrated noble oak. Then the limestone takes the lead, drawing out the finish with a long, salty and precise minerality. The finish leaves hints of lime blossom, delicate honey and damp rock. A Chardonnay Grand Cru with authority, depth and serene elegance.
