Description

La MaldiciónMalvar stems from an almost stubborn idea, very typical of Marc Isart: to restore dignity and passion to a historic Madrid grape variety that has been looked down upon for far too long. After working on pivotal projects in the Madrid wine industry, Isart returned to a harsher, less forgiving landscape – the hills of Valdilecha, where tending the vines is anything but romantic when the summer heat sets in and the soil yields nothing but dust, chalk and dryness. There, on old Malvar plots, cultivated organically and with a biodynamic approach, he found exactly what he was looking for: a local grape capable of speaking with a voice of its own when freed from technical artifice. The bold decision was not to tame it, but to listen to it. And that, in a region with a continental climate and Mediterranean influence, at an altitude of around 700 metres and on clay-limestone soils, already sets the wine’s destiny.

Winemaking

The harvest for La Maldición Malvar is carried out by hand and begins with a rigorous selection of bunches from old bush-trained vines. In the winery, the aim is not to produce an aromatic, easy-drinking white, but rather to achieve texture, tension and authenticity. That is why fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts, and utilising part of the character of the whole bunch—including skins and stems—to extract not so much volume as vigour, vitality and that noble rusticity that gives the wine its identity. Fermentation and ageing take place in a combination of stainless steel and large-format used oak, with the wine spending approximately eight months in the barrel before bottling. No new oak to mask the fruit; here, the vessel complements, rather than overpowers.

Flavour

On the nose, La Maldición Malvar does not burst forth with fruit; it takes a stony, serious path: grapefruit, lemon zest, fresh quince, bitter almond, dry grass, a hint of fine yeast and that waxy note—almost like salty pulp—which lends it depth. On the palate, it becomes even more interesting. It has a dry attack, a citrus edge, a tactile texture, a hint of citrus peel and a slight tannic quality reminiscent of skin contact, but all underpinned by firm acidity and a chalky salinity that really stretches it out. This is no run-of-the-mill white; it’s a white with character – earthy, upright, even somewhat wild – yet tremendously refreshing. Malvar, stone and clay, unvarnished.
