Description
In the heart of Meaño, in the heart of Rías Baixas, Rodrigo Méndez decided to go against the tide. In a region devoted to Albariño, he decided to rescue the Loureiro Tinto, an almost extinct native variety with dark skin and indomitable character. From a vineyard of just 0.5 hectares with vines over 45 years old, planted on sandy soils of granitic origin, Goliardo Loureiro is born among sea mists and Atlantic breezes, in a land that neither forgives nor sweetens. There, rusticity becomes a virtue.
Elaboration
Goliardo Loureira is made with a prolonged maceration of three weeks, after complete destemming. Fermentation is spontaneous, without intervention, in small stainless steel tanks. It is then transferred to used 225 and 500 litre French oak barrels, where it rests for 12 months and undergoes natural malolactic fermentation. No new wood, no artifice: just patient work that seeks to respect the raw and direct expression of Loureiro Tinto. The result is the most robust and structured red wine of the Goliardo collection, but without losing any freshness.
Taste
Goliardo Loureiro opens with deep aromas of ripe black fruit -blackberry, plum-, damp earth and a smoky background reminiscent of the Galician bush after the rain. Balsamic notes of eucalyptus, resin and graphite also appear. On the palate it is powerful and dry, with firm, earthy tannins and a vibrant acidity that gives it verticality. Its rusticity does not prevent a certain elegance: the wine has weight, but also tension. On the finish, a very marked salinity blends with hints of undergrowth and pure minerality, leaving a persistent, authentic impression. It is a wine of character, uncompromising, that speaks with the rough and beautiful voice of its land.
