Description
Edetària Selecció Tinto was born in Gandesa, in the heart of the Terra Alta DO, as a statement of the landscape rather than a statement of fashion. Edetària sought to capture the essence of its most significant plots in this wine, and did so with a blend that is very much a product of the terroir: Garnacha Peluda, Garnacha Tinta and a touch of Cariñena. The result seeks neither artifice nor facile exuberance, but rather the expression of three distinct soils —còdols, tapàs and tapàs blanc— which lend it vigour, depth and a marked minerality. Particularly decisive is the còdols site, an ancient riverbed where Garnacha Peluda has been taking root amongst stones and scarcity for over forty years; this is where much of its serious, balsamic and firm character comes from. It is no coincidence that it was the appellation’s first Vi de Finca Qualificada: here there is a clear determination to elevate Terra Alta through the vineyard itself, rather than through artifice.
Production
The harvest for Edetària Selecció Tinto is carried out by hand, in 15-kilo crates, and the fruit is cooled for 48 hours to lower its temperature before entering the winery. Fermentation takes place slowly, aiming for precise extraction and aromatic purity. Each variety is then aged separately for 12 months in 500-litre barrels and 600-litre foudres made of French oak, followed by a long period of bottle ageing before release. It is a process that refines without taming: it refines Edetària Selecció Tinto, yet leaves intact the stony, Mediterranean and austere character of this Terra Alta red wine.
Taste
In the glass, Edetària Selecció Tinto opens with a balsamic and mentholated nose, very open to the air, and immediately reveals ripe red fruit, cherry, redcurrant, spices, cocoa and tobacco leaf. It is neither a sweet nor a showy red; rather, it possesses a fresh darkness, a mineral sensation that runs through the wine from start to finish. On the palate, it displays volume and power, yet does so with a silky texture, rounded tannins and well-integrated oak. The acidity balances the whole and prevents any heaviness, prolonging a complex, spicy and elegant finish. A Mediterranean wine with vigour, depth and a very distinct personality, ideal for those seeking an elegant, serious red wine deeply connected to its origins.
