Description
One clear morning, on the top of a flint hill in Sancerre, the idea of Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Belle Dame was born. Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, heirs to a centuries-old tradition, decided in 1995 to bottle this wine as an act of faith in the Pinot Noir of the Loire. It was the winery's first single vineyard wine: a bold gesture in a region known above all for its whites. It comes from a single vineyard over 50 years old, planted on flint soils on the eastern slopes of Sancerre, where stone and light intertwine to give the wine a vertical, mineral character. Grown biodynamically, this red is an unadorned expression of the terroir: precision, purity and tension.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand. The bunches destined for Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Belle Dame are completely destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in truncated cone-shaped wooden vats. Nothing is corrected or made up: no enzymes, no filtration. The maceration is slow, and the ageing is carried out in large capacity French oak vats for about 12 months. It is not clarified or filtered before bottling, in order to keep the wine's identity intact. The philosophy is clear: minimum intervention, maximum transparency.
Taste
From the first contact, Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Belle Dame displays a precise, taut, deeply mineral nose. Wild red fruit - black cherry, redcurrant, fresh blackberries - float on a base of gunpowder, wet stones and dried herbs. Everything about it is restrained and elegant, without artifice. On the palate, it is direct and juicy: silky tannins but with character, medium body, vibrant acidity. The flint marks every stroke. There is no fat or excessive volume, but rather an austere, refined architecture, closer to the spirit of a Chambolle than to the classic idea of a Loire red. The finish is long, saline, fresh, with notes of wet earth, sour fruit and a hint of smoke. Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Belle Dame is a wine for those seeking purity, depth and authenticity. A red Sancerre that is not explained, it is listened to.
