Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This 2001 Riesling Frederic Emile Selection de Grains Nobles was harvested during the last possible days (before heavy rain) in early November. Apple jelly and plum preserve, honey and almost Gewurztraminer-like brown spices inform the nose. Surprisingly fat and broad on the palate for a Riesling, its ample acidity hidden, and with enormous concentration of baked apple, plum paste, malt, brown spices, and honey that never threatens to turn cloying or heavy. It is probably hiding more than it is revealing today. Only 1,800 bottles were produced, and hopefully few will be opened before 2020. The Geisberg is seldom conducive to noble rot due to its ventilation, but in both 2000 and 2001 it was possible to pick S.G.N.

Description
Since its founding in 1626, the Trimbach family has cultivated a quiet but unwavering devotion to Alsace Riesling, bringing it to its fullest expression. The Trimbach Alsace Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile Sélection De Grains Nobles is born only in exceptional vintages, when conditions allow for perfect noble botrytis. It is not a wine of volume or compromise: it is made with almost stubborn precision, hand-selecting each berry affected by noble rot, sacrificing quantity in favour of purity and concentration. The vineyard is located on limestone and grey marl soils in Ribeauvillé, in the AOC Alsace, an area with a continental climate, where autumn mists favour the slow and controlled development of the noble fungus. This combination of terroir, patience and rigour is the key to the profound character of this wine.
Winemaking
The Trimbach Alsace Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile Sélection De Grains Nobles is harvested by hand, in several rounds, picking only the grapes with the exact degree of botrytis. They are gently pressed and fermented at low temperature in stainless steel. There is no malolactic fermentation, in order to preserve the natural acidity of the Riesling. The wine is aged for several months on its fine lees, gaining density and texture without losing freshness. Before bottling, the wine is clarified minimally, keeping its essence intact. The result is a wine that is sweet in concentration, but dry in spirit.
Taste
On the nose, Trimbach Alsace Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile Sélection De Grains Nobles is a symphony of candied apricot, acacia honey, ripe pineapple and caramelised citrus, with hints of beeswax and a delicate trace of hydrocarbon, so typical of aged Riesling. The palate is voluptuous, enveloping, marked by an incisive acidity that balances the sweetness: pink grapefruit, lime, dried orange peel, with a saline mineral background reminiscent of wet limestone. The finish is very long, vibrant, almost tactile, with echoes of exotic fruits, sweet spices and a freshness that defies the passage of time. A hedonistic but cerebral wine that demands patience and offers rewards.
