Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Canned peaches and pineapples on the nose, clear but not exciting due to the styled fruit aromas. The 2001 Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles is very sweet, but elegant with concentration, grip and somewhat austere tannins; the finish is sweet but not really elegant. Breaks off in the finish.

Description
The Trimbach winery, with more than four centuries of history in Alsace, only makes its Trimbach Alsace Gewürztraminer Sélection De Grains Nobles in exceptional years: 1967, 1971, 1983, 1886, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2000 and 2001. The decision is always a courageous one, because it requires a late harvest, handpicked, berry by berry, when botrytis cinerea - the famous "noble rot" - transforms the grapes into spheres of aromatic concentration. The fruit comes from selected plots: the Grand Cru Osterberg in Ribeauvillé and the Muelforst estate in Hunawihr, where the vines, over 40 years old, are rooted in clay-limestone soils on a deep limestone base. These south-facing slopes are excellently drained, ideal for growing Gewürztraminer, allowing for slow, concentrated ripening. Yields are very low, just 18 hl/ha, which contributes to the intensity and richness of the wine.
Winemaking
The grapes for the Trimbach Alsace Gewürztraminer Sélection De Grains Nobles are gently pressed in pneumatic presses and the must flows by gravity to the cellar. There it is decanted before fermenting spontaneously for more than three weeks instainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation is not carried out in order to preserve freshness and aromatic purity. Fermentation is stopped naturally, preserving residual sugars that balance the wine without making it cloying. Trimbach Alsace Gewürztraminer Sélection De Grains Nobles is bottled in the spring following the harvest, directly on the estate, and then rests in bottle for several years before release. This long ageing in glass refines its structure and refines its aromatic layers.
Taste
Bright golden in colour, Trimbach Alsace Gewürztraminer Sélection De Grains Nobles displays a lush nose: candied lychee, ripe mango, orange peel, and a background of honey, ginger and wilted rose petals. Botrytis adds notes of candied fruit and sweet spice. The palate is dense, glyceric, with a noble sweetness perfectly balanced by vibrant acidity. Its silky texture is cut by a freshness that makes it endless. Notes of quince, stone fruit and beeswax appear, with a long, saline, almost mineral finish. It is a wine for contemplation, but also a natural ally for foie gras, cured cheeses, spicy cuisine or simply a dessert on its own.
