Description
In the vibrant heart of the Conca de Barberà, where the echoes of the Cistercian monks still seem to whisper among the dry stone terraces, Succés Vinícola was born, the restless project of Mariona Vendrell and Albert Canela. Two young people who, far from following the rules dictated by the industry, decided to create a wine against the tide, faithful to the landscape where they grew up and with a radical respect for the identity of each grape variety. Succés Vinícola El Mentider (the liar) is not a gratuitous name: it is a declaration of intent. It is a statement of intent, an irony well launched into a market that demands tamed wines, made up with oak and over-expressive. Here, the truth is in the glass, even if it is disguised as sarcasm.
Made entirely from Trepat, the indigenous red grape variety that for years was relegated to the production of anodyne rosés or second-rate sparkling wines, Succés Vinícola El Mentider is an act of vindication. The grapes come from old vines, many of them at Altura, grown organically on poor clay-limestone soils, with notable stone and pebble veins. The Mediterranean-influenced continental climate is both tense and fresh: harsh winters, bright summers, and cold nights that fix acidity like indelible lines of ink on the wine's character. Here, in this transition zone between mountain and plain, Trepat finds a nervous, fragrant, almost ethereal expression.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, selecting cluster by cluster. Once in the winery, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, without adding sulphur at this stage, so that the wine can tell its own story without interference. Part of the wine is macerated with whole bunches, providing structure, tannic tension and that characteristic spicy touch. The ageing is carried out in used oak foudres and clay amphorae for 8 to 10 months, seeking to preserve the verticality and freshness of the Trepat without losing depth. It is not clarified or filtered. Bottling is done with a minimum dose of sulphur dioxide, just enough to stabilise.
Taste
Succés Vinícola El Mentider speaks with the serene and firm voice of one who does not need to exaggerate. On the nose, a cascade of tart red fruits: wild blueberry, raspberry, freshly crushed redcurrant on wet stone. Then subtle notes of white pepper, dried rose petal, a hint of black tea and muted wood smoke. Nothing is ostentatious, everything seems to arrive in layers, as if the wine is breathing in real time.
On the palate, the entry is taut and crisp, like a tongue clicking between tart notes of pomegranate, dried flower and a background of Mediterranean herbs: thyme, lavender, bitter orange peel. The tannin is fine, almost tactile, like delicate sandpaper that cleanses the palate. The acidity -that backbone of the well-worked Trepat- pushes it towards a saline, long, precise finish, with a mineral vibration that seems to spring from the earth itself.
A wine for those who enjoy ambiguity, character without make-up, a red wine that refreshes and challenges at the same time. Succés Vinícola El Mentider is a Trepat in its freest and most sincere form. And yes, it might fool you a little with its initial lightness... but it comes back, again and again. Like any good story.
