Description

Franz Strohmeier doesn't make wines to please; he makes them to listen. In Estiria(Steiermark), with steep slopes and a climate of cool nights that sharpens acidity, the TLZ project - Trauben, Liebe und Zeit (grapes, love and time) - was born of an almost stubborn conviction: if the vineyard is alive, the winery should be kept out of the way as little as possible. His biodynamic approach is not a pose, it is routine: walking plots, observing, waiting. "Geduld" means patience, and here it is more than a name: it is a declaration of method. This natural wine focuses on a single variety, Cabernet Jura, worked to show tension and transparency, not muscle.

The origin is Lestein (Sankt Stefan ob Stainz), vineyards around 400 m altitude, with serious slopes and Opok (loam/clay) soils that imprint that mineral and earthy pulse so Styrian. Under the broad label Österreichischer Weinland, Strohmeier allows himself to step out of the "manual" to bottle something more personal, more terroir than recipe. His courage lies precisely in accepting that each vintage brings its own character and not trying to tame it with technology.

Winemaking

At Strohmeier TLZ Geduld, the grapes come in healthy and are vinified according to the TLZ ideology: spontaneous fermentation, minimum intervention, and ageing designed to rest rather than to add external flavours. We work with neutral containers (often used wood), without looking for aromatic make-up, and the wine is bottled when it has found its centre, unhurried, maintaining a sense of purity and energy.

Taste

Strohmeier TLZ Geduld can be serious and restrained at first; give it some air and it opens up. Dark raspberry, plum and a hint of wildness appear, with an undercurrent of damp earth, dried leaf and fine spice. Not a sweet-toothed red on the palate: straight, nervy, with spine-drawing acidity and fine, almost stony-grained tannin. The finish is dry, subtly saline, long, and one that begs to be served at the table: mushrooms, roast poultry, fine cured meats. A patient red wine: less volume, more truth.
