Description
Rossignol-Trapet embodies a Burgundy of deep conviction, not artifice. When Nicolas and David Rossignol took over the domaine in 1990, they inherited much more than just vineyards: they took on the legacy of two historic lineages from the Côte de Nuits and very soon chose a demanding path – that of biodynamics – so that the vineyard could speak for itself, unfiltered. Rossignol Trapet Gevrey ChambertinVieilles Vignes, made entirely from Pinot Noir, is crafted from old vines spread across several plots in the village, some of which are several decades old. This diversity of soils — stony areas, deeper clay soils and strips situated beneath the grands crus — shapes a wine that perfectly encapsulates the character of Gevrey Chambertin: tension, depth, structure and a mineral core of great nobility.
Winemaking
In the cellar, Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes adheres to the same philosophy of precision and respect. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted upon arrival to retain only the healthiest fruit. The winemaking process aims to extract flavour without making the wine harsh: fermentation with indigenous yeasts, controlled maceration and judicious use of the stems depending on the vintage. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for around 12 to 18 months, with the wood always playing a secondary role, refining the texture without overshadowing the terroir. The result is not a Gevrey that has been ‘dressed up’, but one that has been refined: a clean, serene interpretation that remains true to its origins.
Flavour
On the nose, Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes opens with precise red fruit – fresh cherry, raspberry and a hint of plum – all enveloped in violets, undergrowth, delicate spices and a very Burgundian hint of damp earth. It is neither exuberant nor sweet; its character is more restrained, more stony, more profound. On the palate, it is silky, almost delicate, but immediately reveals depth and structure. The tannins are fine, the acidity underpins the whole with freshness, and the wine stretches out with vigour, leaving an impression of refined fruit, subtle minerality and damp woodland. The finish is long, elegant and serious, offering more in the way of detail and persistence than volume. A classic red wine, understated and full of authenticity.
