Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The other new red this time is the 2015 El Pliegue, a wine from a field blend planted in 2001 with Bastardo, Mencía, Carabuñenta and Brancellao and later complemented with some Caíño Longo, the more aromatic, floral and elegant variety from the Caíño family. Given the experience from the 2011 Campo de Probas, which was from this same vineyard, he adjusted the harvesting date—he picked earlier, with a full 1% less alcohol—and he also adjusted the vinification, fermenting all the varieties together with 50% full clusters and maturing the wine in a 2,400-liter oak foudre. It has a lovely rusticity, with more finesse than the 2011, more transparent and pure, mixing earthy and floral notes. It has a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and lots of energy, characterful, with a strong personality. The next vintage from this plot will be 2019. This is evolving very slowly and feels very young. There are 2,505 bottles. It was bottled in May 2018.

Description
When you uncork a bottle of Quinta da Muradella El Pliegue, you not only open a wine, but a story. The story of José Luis Mateo, a passionate winegrower who has dedicated his life to recovering indigenous varieties and expressing, through each glass, the soul of Monterrei, one of Galicia's hidden gems.
Quinta da Muradella El Pliegue is born from a small plot planted in 2001, where Bastardo, Mencía, Carabuñenta and Brancellao grow in harmony, together with a touch of Caíño Longo. If you have never tasted a wine from these varieties, imagine it as a reunion of old friends: each one brings something different, but together they create something really special.
Winemaking
The vineyards sit on granitic soils, on slopes that catch the Galician sun and reflect it on the grapes. These conditions bring a subtle minerality, almost as if you can taste the earth in every sip. Mateo, ever observant, adjusted the vintage to harvest earlier, achieving a perfect balance between freshness and ripeness. Fermentation was done with 50% whole bunches, enhancing the structure and expressiveness of the fruit. The wine then rested in a 2,400 litre oak foudre, gaining depth without losing its essence.
Taste
From the first sip, Quinta da Muradella El Pliegue envelops you with a charming rusticity, like a walk through a Galician forest after the rain. There is some wet earth, some wild flowers and, in the background, a subtle, delicate red fruit, as if timidly peeping out.
The most fascinating thing is its texture: fine, light tannins, but with enough presence to give it character. It is not a wine that shouts, but whispers, leaving an echo that lingers on the palate.
If you have patience, let it evolve for a few years in the bottle. It is one of those wines that, like a good book, gains depth with time. But if curiosity gets the better of you, open it now, accompanied by an unhurried chat and a good plate of roast meat or sautéed mushrooms.
In the end, Quinta da Muradella El Pliegue is not just a wine, it is an invitation to enjoy without haste. And that, in these times, is a luxury that is worth it.
